A&P Mechanic Interview Questions
& Model Answers, 2026

A&P interviews are regulatory as much as mechanical. Panels ask what your certificate actually lets you do, what makes an aircraft airworthy, how you write a maintenance record entry, and what you do when something you signed for turns out to be wrong.

Direct Answer

What are the most common a&p mechanic interview questions?

A&P mechanic interview questions cover six areas: airframe and powerplant certificate privileges and limitations including what requires supervision or additional authorisation, determining airworthiness against type design and condition for safe operation, making maintenance record entries and approving for return to service, airworthiness directive and service bulletin compliance and how it is tracked, inspection types including annual, 100-hour and progressive, and the inspection authorization and what it adds. Pay is anchored to the BLS OEWS May 2025 median of $79,870 a year ($38.40/hr) for aircraft mechanics and service technicians, with the top 10% above $128,890 (SOC 49-3011). Key takeaways
  • Certificate privileges and the two-part airworthiness definition are asked in essentially every A&P interview.
  • Record entries and AD compliance tracking are where employers lose most in an audit β€” describe them precisely.
  • The deferral scenario is a test of whether you will hold the regulation under operational pressure.
  • Anchor pay to the BLS OEWS May 2025 median of $79,870 ($38.40/hr) for aircraft mechanics and service technicians (SOC 49-3011), with the top 10% above $128,890.

Technical questions (6)

Technical questions test your NEC knowledge, conduit bending, troubleshooting skills, and code compliance. Study these before any Journeyman or Master Electrician interview.

T1
What can you approve for return to service, and what can you not?
PrivilegesMid
Model Answer

A certificated mechanic with airframe and powerplant ratings may approve for return to service work performed within the scope of those ratings, provided they have performed or supervised it and used acceptable methods and data. Major repairs and major alterations require the appropriate approval, and an annual inspection requires an inspection authorization. Knowing the boundary is the difference between a legal signature and a certificate action.

T2
What makes an aircraft airworthy?
AirworthinessMid
Model Answer

Two conditions together: it conforms to its type certificate and any approved alterations, and it is in a condition for safe operation. Both must be true. An aircraft with every inspection current but a defect affecting safe operation is not airworthy, and neither is one in perfect condition with an unapproved modification fitted.

T3
Walk me through a maintenance record entry.
RecordsMid
Model Answer

Description of the work performed with enough detail that another mechanic understands what was done, the date of completion, the aircraft total time in service where required, the name and certificate number of the person approving for return to service, and their signature. It references the data used. Entries reading 'complied with' and nothing else are exactly what a records audit or an accident investigation seizes on.

T4
How do you handle airworthiness directive compliance?
AD ComplianceMid
Model Answer

Determine applicability to the specific aircraft, engine, propeller or appliance by serial and configuration, read the AD's method of compliance and its recurring interval if any, perform it using the referenced data, and record compliance with the AD number, revision, method, date and time or cycles including the next due point. Then maintain a current AD status list. Missed recurring ADs are the most common serious records finding.

T5
What is the difference between an annual, a 100-hour and a progressive inspection?
InspectionsMid
Model Answer

An annual is required every twelve calendar months and must be signed by a mechanic holding an inspection authorization; a 100-hour is required for aircraft carrying persons for hire or given for flight instruction for hire and may be signed by an A&P; the scope is essentially the same. Progressive inspection splits the same content into scheduled segments under an approved programme so the aircraft has less downtime.

T6
What does an inspection authorization add and how is it held?
IAExperienced
Model Answer

It permits the holder to conduct annual inspections and to approve major repairs and major alterations for return to service. It requires holding the mechanic certificate with both ratings for the required period, active practice, a fixed base of operations or equipment, passing the knowledge test, and meeting recurring activity or renewal requirements. Candidates should state their status precisely, since it determines what the employer can assign them.

Behavioural questions (4)

Behavioural questions test how you handle conflict, supervision, safety issues, and team dynamics. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for every answer.

B1
Tell me about finding a discrepancy you were not looking for.
DiligenceMid
Model Answer

Panels want it documented and dealt with rather than deferred quietly, because a mechanic who notices something outside the work order and reports it is exactly the person maintenance organisations want on the floor.

B2
Describe a time you refused to sign something.
IntegrityExperienced
Model Answer

Strong answers explain the specific reason β€” insufficient data, work outside privileges, a defect not corrected β€” and the escalation. The signature is a personal certificate action, and a mechanic who signs under pressure is describing a career-ending habit.

B3
Give me an example of working from unfamiliar technical data.
Technical DataMid
Model Answer

Interviewers look for using the current approved data β€” maintenance manual, service bulletin, structural repair manual β€” rather than experience or memory, and asking when something is ambiguous rather than improvising.

B4
Talk about working under maintenance pressure with an aircraft on the ground.
PressureMid
Model Answer

Good answers keep the process intact β€” correct data, correct parts, correct records β€” while working efficiently, and escalate honestly when the aircraft will not be released on time rather than cutting a step to make a departure.

Houston Metro
$64,820/yr

Use BLS data as your anchor. Always quote a range, never a single number. The bottom of your range should be at or above the BLS median for your metro and experience level.

S1
What are your salary expectations?
Salary NegotiationAll
Model Answer

Anchor and position. The BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for aircraft mechanics and service technicians is $79,870 a year ($38.40/hr), with the top 10% above $128,890. Then place yourself on sector β€” airline, corporate, general aviation, repair station or defence β€” aircraft types, whether you hold an inspection authorization, and shift arrangements.

S2
Does holding an inspection authorization change pay?
Salary NegotiationExperienced
Model Answer

It typically does, because it lets the employer assign annual inspections and major repair approvals to you rather than routing them elsewhere. Ask whether the employer pays a differential for it and whether they support the renewal requirements, since holding it requires ongoing activity or training.

S3
What should I ask about besides pay?
Salary NegotiationAll
Model Answer

Shift pattern and overtime, tooling provided versus your own, type training and factory schools, hangar conditions, and whether the role is line or base maintenance. Type training is the most valuable non-cash item because it opens the higher-paying fleets.

Situational

Situational & scenario questions

Hypotheticals that test judgement on the job. Talk through your reasoning out loud β€” safety and code first, then productivity.

You discover a task you signed off last month was performed with superseded data.

Report it immediately rather than hoping the revision was immaterial. Determine what changed between the revisions, whether the work as performed still meets the current data, and whether the aircraft's airworthiness is affected β€” then take corrective action and make the record entries required. Self-disclosure is treated very differently from concealment, and the aircraft may still be flying.

A pilot asks you to defer a defect that is not on the minimum equipment list.

You cannot. Deferral is only possible under an approved minimum equipment list or configuration deviation list provision, and if the item is not covered the defect must be corrected before further flight. Explain it plainly, document the discrepancy, and escalate to maintenance control if there is pressure. This scenario appears in almost every A&P interview and the answer must be unambiguous.

Parts arrive without complete traceability documentation.

Do not install them. Airworthy parts require the appropriate documentation establishing their status and traceability, and installing a part of unknown provenance compromises the aircraft's airworthiness and your signature. Quarantine the parts, raise it with stores and quality, and obtain the correct documentation or reject them. Suspected unapproved parts are reported through the proper channel.

Smart questions to ask the interviewer

"Do you have any questions for us?" is itself a graded question. Asking sharp ones signals you're serious and helps you vet the job.

What aircraft types and operations would I work on?
Is this line or base maintenance, and what is the shift pattern?
What type training is provided?
Is an inspection authorization needed or supported in this role?
What tooling and equipment does the employer provide?
How is technical data managed and kept current?
Pre-interview checklist
  • Know your certificate ratings, IA status and any type training precisely.
  • Be ready to state the two conditions of airworthiness.
  • Rehearse a maintenance record entry aloud.
  • Prepare a refusal-to-sign story and an AD compliance example.
  • Know the published national median and top-10% figure for aircraft mechanics.
