Elevator installers lead the field trades at a $109,910 national median, and union markets push licensed trades higher still: Chicago plumbers earn a $103,380 metro median and Oregon electricians $91,960. Among industrial trades, powerline workers ($95,320), millwrights ($65,700) and industrial machinery mechanics ($64,520) top the pay scale. Union scale, a master license or industrial specialization is the fastest route to the top.

The BLS OEWS May 2025 medians for the core trades run $53,750 (welder) to $65,700 (millwright), with electricians at $63,190, HVAC techs at $61,010 and CNC machinists at $58,750. The 90th percentile clears $95,000 in several trades, $108,510 for electricians, and union metros like Chicago push medians past $100,000. All of these paths start with a paid apprenticeship or a 1-2 year program, not a degree.

State licenses are checked against the issuing board: TDLR in Texas, CSLB in California, DBPR in Florida, IDPH for Illinois plumbers, and equivalents elsewhere. EPA 608 is confirmed with the certifying provider, OSHA cards against DOL trainer records, NIMS through its credential registry, AWS with the welding society, and ASE via its verification system. No unverified candidate ever reaches a shortlist.

Two proven entry paths: a registered apprenticeship, where you earn wages while logging 2,000 to 8,000 supervised hours plus classroom instruction, or a 6-month to 2-year technical program in machining, welding, HVAC or diesel technology followed by certification exams. Helpers and laborers can also start on crews immediately and enroll in an apprenticeship once hired. No path requires a bachelor's degree.
