Heavier lines show what is cut by the drawing plane, medium lines show elements in view, and light lines carry surface and pattern information, with dashed lines for concealed items and centrelines for grids and symmetry. Read correctly, a plan reveals its section cut at a glance. Drawings with uniform line weight are technically legible and practically unreadable, which is why leads check this first.

From consistent datums — usually grid lines and structural faces — with a clear hierarchy of overall, intermediate and detail strings, dimensions to the faces trades actually work to, no duplicate or conflicting strings, and no dimension that has to be calculated by adding others. Openings located to a defined edge or centreline. Over-dimensioning creates contradictions on site as surely as under-dimensioning does.

Show the assembly layer by layer with each material identified, then the continuity of the four control layers — water, air, vapour and thermal — through the junction, including flashing, drainage, sealant and any thermal break. Note the fixings and tolerance. A detail that draws the materials but breaks the water or air line at the junction is the most common defect a checker finds.

Change the drawing, cloud the affected area with a revision delta, record the revision letter or number, the date and the reason in the title-block revision table, update the drawing register, and issue with a transmittal so there is a record of who received what. Superseded sheets are marked as such. Uncontrolled markups sent by email are how the wrong version gets built.

In CAD, referenced backgrounds attached at a common origin with consistent layer states so consultants' drawings overlay correctly and update automatically. In Revit, worksets that let the team work concurrently without contention, linked models with shared coordinates, and view templates controlling graphics. Copying another discipline's drawing into your file instead of referencing it guarantees you will be working from stale information.

Do the parts that are clear, list the specific queries with the sheet and location, and ask them together rather than one at a time or, worse, guessing. Then confirm the interpretation in writing. Drafters who guess produce drawings that pass a quick review and fail on site, and the second round of redlines costs more than the question would have.

Panels want ownership, the immediate response, and the checking change afterwards. Everyone with production experience has one; the answer is scored on the process improvement, not the mistake.

Strong answers show what was prioritised — the sheets contractors need first — what was flagged as incomplete, and how the set was still checked. Drafters who deliver a full set that nobody has checked have not met the deadline.

Interviewers look for it being raised constructively and directly with the author or lead rather than silently fixed or publicly flagged. Catching a coordination error before issue is one of the highest-value things a drafter does.

Good answers describe using the office template and existing sheets as the reference, asking early, and checking output rather than assuming. Every practice has its own conventions and speed of adoption is a real hiring criterion.

Then place yourself on software depth, whether you detail independently or work purely from redlines, sector, and any BIM coordination responsibility.

Usually yes, and family creation, template management and coordination experience change it more than modelling speed alone. Being able to say specifically what you have built — families, view templates, a project template — is worth more in negotiation than listing the software on a résumé.

Overtime treatment at issue dates and whether it is paid, software and hardware, whether there is a route from drafting into technologist or BIM roles, training support, and the project types you would work on. Progression routes matter because drafting bands compress quickly without added responsibility.
