In almost every state, no. Automotive repair is not a licensed trade the way electrical or plumbing work is, and ASE certification is voluntary industry certification rather than a government licence. A handful of states (Michigan and Hawaii, for example) do require state mechanic certification or registration, and shops themselves are often registered with a state consumer-protection agency. Servicing vehicle air conditioning does require the federal EPA Section 609 certification everywhere.

You can be hired into a lube bay within weeks of leaving school. Becoming a technician who is trusted with the full repair order typically takes two to three years, because most ASE certifications require two years of hands-on experience before you can hold the credential. ASE Master status, all eight A-series exams, usually lands around the five-year mark, and the advanced L1 diagnostic exam after that.

The BLS OEWS May 2025 national median is $50,620/yr ($24.34/hr) for SOC 49-3023. Entry maintenance techs sit near the 10th percentile of $34,660, Master technicians earn around the 75th percentile of $70,430, and the top 10% earn more than $81,790, usually diagnostic specialists, dealership foremen, or techs on brands with high labour rates. Most shops pay flat rate, so productive techs can beat these numbers substantially.

Flat rate pays you for the hours a repair is 'booked' at, not the hours you spend. Fix a job booked at 2.5 hours in 1.5 and you still get 2.5. It rewards speed and experience, and it punishes bad diagnostics: a job that runs long, a comeback you redo for free, or a slow day with no cars means a thin cheque. Ask any shop directly whether it pays flat rate, hourly, or a guaranteed base plus flat rate.

It works if you enjoy diagnosis and can tolerate the trade-offs. The plusses: paid from day one, no degree, ASE credentials that transfer anywhere, and a genuine climb to $70K to $80K+ as a Master or diagnostic tech. The minuses: you buy your own tools (several thousand dollars, growing every year), flat rate transfers business risk onto you, and the work is physically hard on your back, hands and knees.

Not in this decade. EVs remove oil changes and exhaust work but add high-voltage battery, thermal-management and software service, and every EV still needs brakes, tyres, suspension, glass and ADAS calibration. BLS still projects 4% growth and about 70,000 openings a year through 2034, largely because the existing fleet keeps ageing. The real effect is on skills: techs with high-voltage safety training and ADAS calibration experience are the scarce ones.
