There is no national cable-installer licence. Some states require a limited-energy or low-voltage contractor licence for inside communications wiring, held at the company or technician level. Outside-plant work is governed instead by the National Electrical Safety Code, OSHA 1910.268 and carrier standards rather than by a licensing board.

Under Telecommunications Line Installers and Repairers (SOC 49-9052), the OEWS May 2025 median is $74,330 a year, or $35.73 an hour, with the 10th percentile at $45,310 and the 90th at $103,680. That code covers outside-plant line work as well as service installation, so residential drop installers usually sit toward the lower end.

In headline terms, yes: BLS projects a 3.1% employment decline for the occupation over 2024–2034 as legacy copper and cable-TV service work shrinks. Roughly 8,900 openings a year still arise from retirements and turnover, and fiber construction remains an area of active demand within the shrinking total.

Basic drop and premises installation can be learned in months. Outside-plant competence — aerial placing, underground pulls, splicing and testing — is classified by BLS as long-term on-the-job training and typically takes two to four years, with fiber certification layered on top.

Electricians install power wiring under the National Electrical Code and are licensed in nearly every state after a four- to five-year apprenticeship. Cable installers work communications and low-voltage circuits under NEC Chapters 7 and 8 and, outdoors, under the NESC, generally without an individual licence, and never work energised power conductors.
