Because layers control what can be turned off, referenced, plotted and exchanged — they are the drawing's data structure. Applying one means putting every object on its correct layer with properties set by layer rather than overridden per object, no stray objects on layer zero except within blocks, and no ad-hoc layers created for convenience. Drawings with overridden properties are unusable to anyone who references them.

Anything repeated or standardised — symbols, fittings, title-block elements, standard details — should be a block, with attributes where the content varies, drawn on layer zero so it inherits the insertion layer, and named to the office convention. Libraries need an owner and a review route. Exploding blocks to edit an instance is the habit that destroys consistency across a set.

Start from the office template so units, text and dimension styles, layers and plot settings are already correct, draw at full size in model space, and set scale in the viewport rather than by scaling geometry. Annotation is placed so it reads at the plotted scale, the title block is completed, and the sheet is checked at actual output size. Drawings scaled in model space break every reference and measurement downstream.

Bring it in at the supplied coordinate system without moving or rotating the geometry, keep the survey on its own referenced layer or as an external reference so it stays as issued, and note the datum and units. Any translation is documented and reversible. Technicians who relocate a survey to a convenient origin cause every subsequent setting-out check to disagree with the surveyor's.

Correct plot style table matched to the office standard so line weights come out as intended, the right paper size and scale set in the layout, viewport scales locked, no objects on non-plotting layers that need to print, and a preview checked before output. Then a PDF opened and inspected rather than assumed. Most plotting failures are plot-style or viewport-scale problems, and both are visible in preview.

A defined pass: purge and audit the file, check layers and property overrides, verify dimensions against the source, check text for overlaps and truncation at plotted scale, confirm references are current and paths correct, and compare against the redlines line by line. Self-checking is what determines whether a checker spends ten minutes or two hours on your sheet, and leads notice which.

Panels want method — templates, blocks, batch processes, and a checking pass that survives the rush — rather than heroics and long hours. Speed achieved by skipping the checking stage is not speed at all; it simply moves the cost to the checker, the coordinator or the site team.

Strong answers describe cleaning it defensively without altering the source geometry, raising the issue with the sender, and keeping the received file unmodified for the record. Silently fixing someone else's drawing every cycle is a workload trap.

Interviewers look for the habit of cross-checking related sheets rather than working sheet by sheet. Catching a mismatch between a plan and a section before issue is exactly what a technician is there for.

Good answers describe using existing project files as the reference, asking about the standard early, and validating output. Practices differ enormously and speed of adaptation is what makes a technician useful in week one rather than month three.

Then place yourself on sector, software breadth, whether you work from redlines or produce drawings independently, and any coordination or setting-out responsibility.

By adding responsibility rather than software: independent detailing, coordination between disciplines, template and standards work, or moving into BIM. Technicians who stay purely production-focused compress against the middle of the band, and the honest negotiation is about the next responsibility rather than the current one.

Overtime policy and whether it is paid, hardware and software, training and certification support, whether the role is on one project or many, and progression routes. Ask specifically what the person who last held this role went on to do.
