Two routes dominate. The civilian one is an associate degree in electronics engineering technology, instrumentation or metrology, followed by a junior position in a calibration lab where you are signed off on procedures discipline by discipline. The military one is arguably stronger: Air Force PMEL and Navy and Army TMDE programs train calibration technicians thoroughly and their graduates are recruited hard by commercial labs. Either way, competence is proven through documented sign-offs on specific procedures rather than by a general qualification.

Calibration Technologists and Technicians (SOC 17-3028) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $67,820 a year, $32.61 an hour, from $46,680 at the 10th percentile to $106,550 at the 90th. The upper half of that band is concentrated in regulated, high-precision industries — aerospace, semiconductor, medical device and pharmaceutical — where calibration failures have expensive consequences. Technicians qualified across several measurement disciplines and those acting as technical signatories for accredited scopes sit highest.

No licence is required, and the recognized voluntary credential is the American Society for Quality's Certified Calibration Technician, which requires documented work experience plus a proctored examination covering metrology principles, measurement systems analysis, calibration systems and quality standards. Beyond that, what employers actually check is your record of internal procedure sign-offs and, for accredited labs, whether you can be listed as approved personnel under the laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 scope of accreditation.

Compare instruments against standards of known and better uncertainty, then document the result. That means receiving an instrument, recording as-found readings before any adjustment, performing the comparison under controlled environmental conditions, adjusting where permitted, recording as-left data, calculating whether the result falls within tolerance given the measurement uncertainty, and issuing a certificate. When something is found out of tolerance, the technician also drives the investigation into every measurement that instrument influenced since its previous calibration.

Traceability is an unbroken chain of documented calibrations linking a working instrument, through progressively better standards, to a national metrology institute such as NIST — with a stated measurement uncertainty at every link. It matters because without it a number is just a reading. Regulators, customers and ISO/IEC 17025 assessors accept a measurement only if the chain can be shown, which is why calibration labs invest so heavily in reference standards and record keeping rather than simply in adjusting instruments.

It is stable and specialized rather than large. BLS projects 4.7% growth for 2024–2034 and only around 1,400 openings a year, so opportunity is concentrated rather than abundant. The compensating strengths are real: the work is required by regulation in industries that cannot stop, it is indoor and clean, it depends on documented competence that takes years to accumulate, and technicians who broaden across disciplines and into accreditation management have a defensible path to the top of a band that reaches $106,550.
