No. A chemical production supervisor is typically promoted from the operator ranks, and the prerequisite is operating experience, unit qualifications and demonstrated leadership rather than a college degree. Many supervisors hold a high-school diploma or a two-year process-technology associate degree from their operator days. A degree becomes more relevant for the next step — production superintendent or salaried operations management — where business and engineering education can help, but it is not required to become a first-line supervisor.
