Almost everyone starts as a concrete laborer — setting forms, tying and chairing rebar, pulling hose and screeding — because you have to understand how the material behaves before anyone hands you the surface. From there the two routes are a registered apprenticeship of roughly three to four years, most often through the OPCMIA cement masons' union or an ABC open-shop program, or simply years on a good crew with a finisher willing to teach. No state licenses the trade, so competence is demonstrated, not certified into existence.

Cement Masons and Concrete Finishers (SOC 47-2051) carry an OEWS May 2025 median of $57,020 a year, or $27.41 an hour, from $39,190 at the 10th percentile to $85,480 at the 90th. The spread reflects two different businesses inside one code: residential driveways and patios at the low end, and union commercial placements, superflat industrial floors and finishing contractors at the high end. Weather also matters — northern finishers earn higher hourly rates over a shorter working year.

The terms are used interchangeably and BLS treats them as one occupation, but there is a traditional distinction. Cement mason describes the broader craft including vertical and structural work — patching, forming, architectural and cementitious finishes on walls, columns and bridge structures. Concrete finisher usually refers specifically to flatwork: slabs, floors, sidewalks and pavements, where the skill concentrates on timing and surface. Most union cement masons do both; many independent finishers only ever do flatwork.

Not legally — no state issues a concrete finisher license. But the American Concrete Institute's Concrete Flatwork Finisher and Concrete Flatwork Technician certifications have become the de facto standard, requiring documented finishing hours plus a written exam and a performance evaluation. Commercial specifications increasingly name ACI certification as a requirement for the crew placing the floor, particularly on projects with flatness and levelness tolerances, so it has moved from optional to commercially important.

The set time is the whole problem. Concrete's working window shifts with mix design, cement content, admixtures, ambient temperature, humidity, wind and subgrade moisture, and it cannot be paused. Trowel too early and you seal bleed water into the surface, weakening it; trowel too late and the slab is unworkable. There is no instrument that tells you when — it is read by eye, by boot print, by the sound the machine makes. That judgment takes several seasons of pours to acquire.

It is among the hardest on the body in the trades. The work is on the knees and bent at the waist for long stretches, the material is caustic enough to cause chemical burns through soaked clothing, and the schedule is driven by early starts and pours that must be finished regardless of how long they take. Silica exposure from cutting and grinding is a regulated hazard under OSHA 1926.1153. Finishers who last plan a route to foreman, superintendent or contracting well before the body forces it.
