A drafter converts the designs and calculations of engineers and architects into precise technical drawings and plans used to manufacture products or construct buildings and infrastructure. Working mostly in CAD, and increasingly in BIM, they specify dimensions, materials, tolerances, assembly details and notes so the design can actually be built. Drafters coordinate details across a drawing set, revise from markups, and ensure drawings meet the relevant standards. The specifics depend on the discipline: architectural drafters produce building plans, civil drafters site and infrastructure drawings, mechanical drafters part and assembly drawings, and electrical drafters wiring and circuit layouts.

Most drafters complete an associate degree or a technical-school certificate in drafting or CAD, learning drawing conventions, geometry and software — a shorter, cheaper path than a four-year degree. The key is proficiency in the CAD and BIM tools of your target discipline: AutoCAD broadly, Revit for architectural/BIM work, Civil 3D for civil, and SolidWorks or Inventor for mechanical. You also learn the relevant drawing standards, such as ASME Y14.5 for mechanical GD&T. Voluntary ADDA certification can signal competence but is not required. From there you gain experience, specialize in a discipline, and advance into senior and CAD/BIM-management roles.

Not a four-year degree. Drafting is unlicensed, and the standard entry credential is an associate degree or a technical certificate in drafting or CAD, which many community and technical colleges offer. What employers really screen on is demonstrable software skill — AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D or SolidWorks depending on discipline — plus knowledge of drawing standards. Some people enter with just a strong certificate and portfolio of drawings. So while formal training is expected, it is at the associate/certificate level rather than a bachelor's, which keeps the time and cost of entry relatively low compared with the engineering roles drafters support.

Pay varies by drafting discipline, but using Architectural and Civil Drafters (SOC 17-3011) as a broad anchor, BLS reports an OEWS May 2025 median of $66,150 a year, or $31.80 an hour, with $46,260 at the 10th percentile and $99,710 at the 90th. Mechanical and electrical drafters fall under separate codes and can pay somewhat differently. Junior drafters sit near the bottom of the range, while senior drafters, designers and CAD/BIM leads reach the top. The main levers on pay are discipline and industry, depth of CAD/BIM skill, and moving into senior or management roles.

It is changing rather than disappearing. Routine 2D drafting has been automated by CAD and BIM, which has held down overall growth — BLS projects only about 4.1% change through 2034 across drafters. But demand persists for drafters who can do more than push lines: those skilled in 3D modeling, BIM coordination and discipline-specific standards remain valuable, because someone still has to turn engineering and architectural designs into accurate, buildable documentation. The practical takeaway is that a drafter who keeps up with BIM/3D tools and can move toward design-drafting or an engineering-technician track has a durable path, while a purely 2D drafter faces more pressure.

A drafter documents a design as technical drawings, working from the direction of engineers or architects. A designer (or design drafter) takes on more of the design decisions — sizing, detailing and configuring elements within established parameters — a step up in responsibility that a senior drafter can grow into. An engineer or architect originates the design, performs the analysis and carries professional responsibility, typically holding a bachelor's degree and, for licensed practice, a PE or architecture license. Drafters and designers are essential to executing the work, but the engineer or architect owns the design intent and the legal accountability for it.
