The International Code Council's electrical inspector certifications are the national benchmark — separate residential and commercial examinations tied to a code edition and renewed on continuing education. The International Association of Electrical Inspectors supplies the code-cycle training and its own certification programs, and IAEI chapter membership is close to universal in the field. Several states certify or license electrical inspectors directly, generally requiring a master or journeyman electrician licence first, and those certifications do not transfer automatically across state lines.

In practice yes, and in many jurisdictions as a matter of formal requirement. The job is to judge installations against the National Electrical Code and defend the judgement to a contractor who has a schedule and an opinion, which is not credible without having done the work. Typical postings ask for a journeyman or master licence plus four to ten years of field experience. Engineers occasionally enter through plan review, but field inspection remains overwhelmingly a second career for licensed electricians.

NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, in whichever edition the jurisdiction has formally adopted — and that is the operative detail, because adoption lags publication and states amend the text locally. The NEC is revised on a three-year cycle, so an inspector may be enforcing an edition two or more cycles behind the current one, with state amendments layered on. Inspectors also apply the International Building or Residential Code where electrical work interacts with structure, egress and fire-rated assemblies.

BLS projects a 0.8% decline in Construction and Building Inspectors over 2024–2034, driven by consolidation of single-discipline posts into combination inspector roles, remote and video inspection technology, and constrained municipal budgets. That is a statement about total headcount, not about hiring: roughly 14,800 openings a year still arise because the inspection workforce is markedly older than the trades and retiring steadily.
