Almost everyone starts on a landscape or irrigation crew with no formal prerequisite beyond a driver's licence, learning trenching, pipe assembly, head layout and controller wiring by doing it. BLS folds irrigation work into Landscaping and Groundskeeping Workers (SOC 37-3011), whose OEWS May 2025 median is $39,150 a year, $18.82 an hour, from $31,150 at the 10th percentile to $56,730 at the 90th. That figure is dominated by general mowing and grounds labour, so it understates dedicated irrigation service technicians, who command more because the diagnostic and backflow-testing work is scarcer. It varies by state and the answer matters, because irrigation connects to the potable water supply. Texas requires a TCEQ Licensed Irrigator to sell, design or install landscape irrigation systems, with a separate Irrigation Technician licence for installers working under one. Other states regulate the work through plumbing or specialty contractor licensing, and some not at all. Separately, testing backflow prevention assemblies requires tester certification in most states regardless of whether irrigation itself is licensed.

The Irrigation Association issues the recognised industry set: Certified Irrigation Technician for service and installation, Certified Irrigation Contractor for business-level work, and Certified Landscape or Golf Irrigation Auditor for distribution-uniformity and conservation auditing. All are exam-based and renew on continuing education. Alongside them, backflow prevention assembly tester certification to the ASSE 5110 standard, obtained through a state-approved training provider, is the credential with actual legal force in most jurisdictions.

It is an assembly that stops water in an irrigation system from being drawn or pushed back into the drinking-water main, carrying fertiliser, pesticide or standing-water contamination with it. Plumbing codes require one on every irrigation connection, typically a reduced-pressure principle or pressure-vacuum-breaker assembly depending on hazard level. Water purveyors mandate annual testing by a certified tester using a calibrated differential-pressure gauge, and will shut the service off if the report is not filed. It is the one part of irrigation work with direct public-health consequences.

In most of the country, sharply so. Northern markets run spring startups, summer service, autumn winterisation blowouts and then a dead winter, which is why many technicians pair the season with snow removal or holiday lighting. Southern and southwestern markets run close to year-round, with the heaviest demand during drought restrictions when auditing and conservation retrofits pick up. Golf courses and large institutional properties offer the steadiest year-round irrigation employment because the systems need attention regardless of season.
