Lab Technician Interview Questions
& Model Answers, 2026

Lab technician interviews are about care and consistency. Panels ask how you handle samples, how you record what you did, what you do when an instrument reading looks wrong, and whether you would tell someone if you made a mistake.

Direct Answer

What are the most common lab technician interview questions?

Lab technician interview questions cover six areas: sample receipt, labelling, storage and stability, routine instrument operation with calibration and system suitability checks, good documentation practice including contemporaneous recording and correcting entries properly, reagent and standard preparation with traceability, contamination control and aseptic or clean technique where required, and laboratory safety including chemical handling and waste. Pay is anchored to the BLS OEWS May 2025 median of $60,390 a year ($29.03/hr) for biological technicians, with the top 10% above $92,040 (SOC 19-4031) β€” a broad technician series covering several laboratory settings. Key takeaways
  • Good documentation practice and sample identity control are the two topics panels test in every laboratory interview.
  • Disclosing an error immediately is scored far higher than never having made one.
  • Following the controlled procedure and raising improvements through change control is the compliance instinct being assessed.
  • Anchor pay to the BLS OEWS May 2025 median of $60,390 ($29.03/hr) for chemical technicians (SOC 19-4031), with the top 10% above $92,040.

Technical questions (6)

Technical questions test your NEC knowledge, conduit bending, troubleshooting skills, and code compliance. Study these before any Journeyman or Master Electrician interview.

T1
Walk me through receiving and handling a sample.
Sample HandlingAll
Model Answer

Check the sample against the request for identity, quantity, container and condition, record receipt with date, time and receiver, verify any temperature requirement was maintained in transit, assign a unique identifier, and store under the specified conditions with the stability window noted. Anything out of specification on arrival is recorded and reported rather than quietly processed. Sample identity errors are the failure that invalidates everything downstream.

T2
What checks do you run before using an analytical instrument?
InstrumentsMid
Model Answer

Confirm the instrument is within its calibration and maintenance interval, run the system suitability or performance check required by the method, check consumables such as columns, lamps or electrodes, verify the correct method and parameters are loaded, and record it all. If system suitability fails, the run does not proceed. Data generated on an instrument that failed its check cannot be used, so the check comes first every time.

T3
What is good documentation practice?
DocumentationAll
Model Answer

Records that are attributable, legible, contemporaneous, original and accurate: written at the time in permanent ink or the electronic system, signed and dated, no blank fields, corrections made with a single line through the error, the correction, initials, date and reason β€” never obliterated or overwritten. Recording results before the work is done, or copying from a scrap of paper later, is a data integrity finding rather than untidiness.

T4
How do you prepare and record a reagent or standard?
ReagentsMid
Model Answer

Use materials of the specified grade with lot numbers recorded, calibrated balances and volumetric glassware, follow the written procedure, label with identity, concentration, preparer, preparation date and expiry, and record the calculation and weights in the record so the preparation can be reconstructed. Standards are traceable to a certified reference where the method requires it. Unlabelled solutions on a bench are discarded, not used.

T5
How do you prevent contamination and carryover?
Contamination ControlMid
Model Answer

Clean work areas and dedicated equipment where cross-contamination matters, correct order of work from low to high concentration, appropriate cleaning between samples with documented cleaning verification for critical applications, single-use consumables where available, gloves changed appropriately, and blanks run to demonstrate the controls work. In microbiology or cell culture, aseptic technique with a certified biosafety cabinet and environmental monitoring.

T6
What safety practices apply in your laboratory work?
SafetyAll
Model Answer

Reading the safety data sheet before using an unfamiliar chemical, correct personal protective equipment for the hazard, fume hood use for volatiles, segregation and labelling of waste streams, awareness of incompatible chemicals in storage, knowing where the spill kit, eyewash and shower are, and reporting near misses. Where biological material is handled, the containment level and disinfection procedures for that agent.

Behavioural questions (4)

Behavioural questions test how you handle conflict, supervision, safety issues, and team dynamics. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for every answer.

B1
Tell me about a mistake you made in the laboratory.
IntegrityAll
Model Answer

Panels want immediate disclosure, an assessment of what was affected, and the corrective action. Concealing a laboratory error is a data integrity issue and the single fastest way to fail this interview.

B2
Describe a result that looked wrong.
Critical ThinkingMid
Model Answer

Strong answers check the obvious causes β€” sample mix-up, dilution error, instrument condition, calculation β€” before reporting or repeating, and record the investigation rather than simply rerunning until a result looks acceptable.

B3
Give me an example of managing a heavy sample workload.
OrganisationAll
Model Answer

Interviewers look for prioritisation by sample stability and turnaround requirement, sensible batching of similar analyses, and flagging to a supervisor when the workload starts to threaten quality rather than quietly rushing and generating a result nobody can trust.

B4
Talk about following a procedure you thought could be improved.
ComplianceAll
Model Answer

Good answers follow the procedure as written and raise the improvement through the change control route. Deviating from a controlled procedure because it seems better is a serious finding in a regulated laboratory.

Salary & negotiation questions (3)

US Median
$63,190/yr
Houston Metro
$64,820/yr
P90 (top 10%)
$108,510/yr

Use BLS data as your anchor. Always quote a range, never a single number. The bottom of your range should be at or above the BLS median for your metro and experience level.

S1
What are your salary expectations?
Salary NegotiationAll
Model Answer

Anchor and position. The BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for biological technicians is $60,390 a year ($29.03/hr), with the top 10% above $92,040 β€” a broad technician series covering several laboratory settings. Position on the techniques and instruments you run independently, the regulatory environment, and shift arrangements.

S2
How do regulated and research laboratories compare on pay?
Salary NegotiationAll
Model Answer

Regulated environments such as GMP quality control often pay somewhat better and are more procedural; academic and research laboratories offer variety and technique breadth with tighter budgets. Ask about the environment and the documentation expectations, because the daily work differs more than the pay does.

S3
What should I ask about besides pay?
Salary NegotiationAll
Model Answer

Training on specific instruments, shift patterns and any weekend cover, progression to analyst or scientist roles, tuition support, and the instruments you would actually be trained on. Instrument training is the most transferable asset a technician can accumulate.

Situational

Situational & scenario questions

Hypotheticals that test judgement on the job. Talk through your reasoning out loud β€” safety and code first, then productivity.

You realise you recorded a result against the wrong sample identifier yesterday.

Report it immediately to your supervisor and correct the record properly β€” a single line through the error, the correction, your initials, the date and the reason β€” never by overwriting. Then assess the scope: whether any result was reported out, whether other samples in the batch are affected, and whether an investigation is required. The correction is straightforward; concealing it or backdating anything is not recoverable.

A sample arrives outside its required temperature range.

Do not process it as though it were acceptable. Record the arrival condition with the actual reading, quarantine the sample, and notify the requester and your supervisor so a decision can be made on whether the analysis is still valid for that analyte. Some parameters tolerate an excursion and others do not. Analysing it quietly produces a result that looks normal and may be entirely wrong.

Your supervisor asks you to release a result before the repeat analysis is finished.

Explain what is not yet complete and what the risk is, and ask for the instruction in a form that is recorded if it stands. Results are released against the procedure, and a technician releasing data outside it carries part of the responsibility. Where there is genuine urgency, a provisional result can sometimes be communicated with its status clearly stated rather than formally released.
