What is NCCER certification and how do you earn it?
NCCER is the National Center for Construction Education and Research, a not-for-profit education foundation that develops standardised craft training curricula and credentials for the construction and maintenance industries. You earn NCCER credentials through an Accredited Training Sponsor — an employer, union, technical college or training centre approved by NCCER — by completing the Core curriculum (basic safety, construction maths, hand and power tools, blueprints, rigging basics, communication and employability skills) and then the modules of a craft-specific curriculum organised into Levels 1 through 4. NCCER Assessment, Written Tests and Performance Profiles

NCCER credentials rest on two independent legs. Written module tests establish that you know the theory; performance profiles require you to actually do the task — cut and thread pipe, terminate a conductor, weld a coupon, rig a lift — while a qualified instructor or evaluator signs off against a defined standard. Passing the written test alone does not complete a module, which is what distinguishes an NCCER credential from a classroom certificate.

NCCER levels map onto the helper-to-journeyman progression that industrial contractors already pay against, so the credential is usually the evidence for a step up rather than a premium of its own. BLS reports pay by craft occupation, not by credential.

Find an Accredited Training Sponsor
NCCER credentials can only be earned through an organisation NCCER has accredited — an employer, a union training centre, a technical college or a training provider. Their instructors and evaluators are the people authorised to sign your written tests and performance profiles into the Registry, so this is the first practical decision.
Complete the Core curriculum
Every craft path starts with Core: basic safety, construction maths, hand and power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging, communication and employability skills. Core is credentialed in its own right and is what most industrial contractors screen entry-level hires against.
Work through the craft levels
