What is PRINCE2 and how does it differ from PMP?
PRINCE2 is a project management method β a prescribed way of running a project β where the widely held alternative credentials certify knowledge of a broader body of practice. It originated in UK government project management, is now owned and certified by PeopleCert, and is used extensively across UK and European public and private sectors and in international organisations. The method rests on seven principles that a project must satisfy to be run under it: continued business justification, learn from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, manage by stages, manage by exception, focus on products, and tailor to suit the project. Around those sit defined themes or practices covering areas such as business case, organisation, quality, plans, risk, change and progress, and a set of processes covering the project life cycle from directing and initiating through to closing. Certification comes at two levels: a Foundation level with no prerequisites, testing whether you understand the method, and a Practitioner level requiring Foundation or an accepted equivalent, testing whether you can apply and tailor it to a scenario in an open-book examination. The certifying body requires renewal rather than treating certification as permanent, and the method has moved edition, so candidates should confirm which edition their examination covers.
- PRINCE2 is a prescribed method, certified by PeopleCert at Foundation and Practitioner levels.
- Seven principles define the method, including continued business justification and mandatory tailoring.
- The Practitioner examination is open book because applying and tailoring the method is the tested skill.
- Certification requires renewal rather than lasting indefinitely, and the method has moved edition.
PRINCE2 at a glance
| Cost | Training and examination are usually purchased together from accredited training organisations, whose prices vary by provider and country β check current pricing with the certifying body or an accredited provider |
| Duration | A Foundation course of a few days, with Practitioner typically a further short course and examination |
| Issued by | PeopleCert, which owns and certifies the method |
| Format | Foundation is closed-book multiple choice; Practitioner is an open-book scenario-based objective examination using the official manual |
| Expiry | The certifying body requires renewal rather than treating certification as permanent β check its current renewal options |
| Who needs it | Project managers in UK and European public sector, government suppliers, international organisations and any employer that has adopted the method |
| Prerequisites | None for Foundation; Practitioner requires Foundation or an accepted equivalent project management certification |
| Edition note | The method has moved edition and terminology changed with it β confirm which edition your examination covers |

The Seven Principles, Two Levels and the Open-Book Exam
The seven principles are the method's contract
A project is only being run under the method if it satisfies all seven: continued business justification (the business case stays valid throughout, and the project stops if it does not), learn from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, manage by stages, manage by exception (tolerances are delegated and only breaches escalate), focus on products, and tailor to suit the project. The last is routinely ignored by organisations that apply the method rigidly and then blame it for being bureaucratic.
How the two levels differ
Where PRINCE2 matters geographically
Project managers are counted as project management specialists in federal wage statistics wherever they work, so the credential does not change occupational category. What it changes is which markets are open: the method dominates UK and much of European public sector project management and its supply chains, while North American employers more often expect a different credential entirely.

What PRINCE2 Covers, Principles Through Processes
Business Justification
The requirement that a viable, desirable and achievable business case exists at the start and remains valid throughout β with project closure as the correct answer when it does not.
Project Organisation
The project board with its business, user and supplier interests, the project manager's delegated authority, and assurance separated from delivery.
Product Focus
Planning from product descriptions with defined quality criteria rather than from activity lists β the method's most distinctive and most frequently skipped practice.
Manage by Exception
Delegating tolerances for time, cost, quality, scope, risk and benefit, and escalating only when they will be breached β the mechanism that keeps boards out of daily delivery.
Manage by Stages
Breaking the project into management stages with a go or no-go decision at each boundary, so continuation is a deliberate choice rather than momentum.
Tailoring
Scaling the method to the project's size, risk and context β a principle, not an optional extra, and the answer to most complaints about bureaucracy.
How do you get PRINCE2 certified, step by step?
Check which edition and which market you need
The method has moved edition and terminology changed, and employers may specify a level or an edition. Confirm what your target employers ask for and which edition current examinations cover before booking anything, because training bought against an older edition is wasted money.
Take Foundation to learn the structure
Foundation has no prerequisites and establishes the vocabulary β principles, themes or practices, processes, management products and roles. It is a memorisation-heavy level, and candidates who understand why each element exists retain it far better than those who learn definitions.
Prepare for Practitioner by working scenarios with the manual open
The Practitioner examination is open book and scenario based, so the skill is navigating the manual quickly and applying the method to a situation. Practise with the manual you will take in, tabbed and familiar. Candidates who rely on the book without knowing its structure run out of time.
Plan for renewal
The certifying body does not treat certification as permanent. Renewal options have included re-examination and subscription-based continuing professional development arrangements. Check the current position when you certify, because assuming a lifetime credential is the most common administrative mistake with this scheme.
Not Law, But Written Into Contracts
The method is not mandated by legislation, but it is embedded in procurement practice: UK and European public sector bodies and international organisations frequently require suppliers to run projects under it and to staff them with certified project managers, and that requirement flows down through supply chains. That contractual embedding, rather than any regulatory rule, is why the credential is close to essential in some markets and largely unknown in others.
