Lawyers lead at a $159,670 national median (BLS OEWS May 2025, SOC 23-1011), with the 10th percentile at $78,360 and the top decile far above it; corporate counsel, compliance counsel and Big Law associates all sit in that occupation. Outside the bar, compliance officers earn a $80,730 median and law clerks $64,920. Among legal support roles, litigation and corporate paralegals top out around $101,500 at the 90th percentile.

Litigation paralegals, eDiscovery specialists and compliance professionals are the hardest legal roles to fill in 2026. Firms have pushed document review, discovery management and case preparation onto certified paralegals, while regulated employers in finance, healthcare and energy hire compliance officers out of the same pool. Corporate and contract attorneys move quickly too, especially in-house.

No state licenses paralegals. You work under attorney supervision, and unauthorised practice of law is the line you cannot cross. Employers screen instead on the voluntary credentials, NALA's Certified Paralegal (CP), NFPA's Registered Paralegal (RP, via the PACE exam), and in Texas the TBLS board certification. California is the one exception: Business and Professions Code section 6450 sets education and continuing-education requirements for anyone using the paralegal title.

Paralegals and legal assistants (SOC 23-2011) earn a $62,890 national median, from $44,740 at the 10th percentile to $101,500 at the 90th, while lawyers (SOC 23-1011) earn a $159,670 median starting at $78,360 at the 10th percentile. The gap reflects three years of law school and bar admission. Geography compresses it: paralegals earn $89,750 in the District of Columbia and $79,400 in Washington state.

Attorney bar standing is verified directly with the admitting state bar, including any discipline history. Paralegal certifications are confirmed with the issuing body, NALA for the CP, NFPA for the RP, and the Texas Board of Legal Specialization for TBLS board certification. eDiscovery platform credentials (such as the Relativity Certified Administrator) are checked with the vendor. No candidate reaches a shortlist on a self-reported credential.

The paralegal route is the main one and needs no law degree: a two-year paralegal associate degree, or a bachelor's in any field plus an ABA-approved paralegal certificate, both hire well. Legal secretary and legal assistant roles hire on office and litigation-support skills alone. From there, the NALA CP credential and a practice-area specialisation (litigation, corporate, IP) are what raise pay, and eDiscovery platform skills raise it fastest.

For attorneys, yes on pay: a $159,670 median and strong six-figure ceilings, though bar admission takes three years of school plus an exam. For paralegals, BLS projects little or no employment change through 2034 while still expecting about 39,300 openings a year from turnover, so the market rewards specialisation, certification and eDiscovery skill rather than headcount growth. Compliance is the growth edge of the sector.
