California aerospace engineers earn a median $157,620 a year, $75.78 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025, with the middle half between $129,010 and $193,060 and a full range of $104,370 to $220,670. That is 16.8% above the $134,960 national median — before California's income tax, the highest in the country.

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont at $191,260, then San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara at $181,630, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim at $163,280, San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles at $135,490 and San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad at $135,010. The Bay Area's lead over Los Angeles is the interesting fact here: northern California aerospace employers compete directly with software and semiconductor firms for engineering talent and pay accordingly.

No. California licenses professional engineers through the Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists, but there is no aerospace branch, and the industrial exemption means engineers employed by manufacturers do not need a PE licence to practise.
