Ohio cdl driver license types: the full Ohio BMV ladder
The Ohio BMV does not issue journeyman or master grades. What it issues are the federal CDL classes (A, B and C) plus endorsements, all defined in 49 CFR Part 383. There is no business licence attached: to run trucks for hire you need FMCSA operating authority and a USDOT number, which is a separate federal registration and not a BMV matter.
Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
Issued by the BMV once you pass the knowledge tests and present a valid DOT medical certificate. Lets you drive a commercial vehicle with a CDL holder beside you, and must be held at least 14 days before the skills test.
Class C CDL
Vehicles under 26,001 lbs that still need a CDL because they carry 16 or more passengers or placarded hazardous materials.
Class B CDL
Single vehicles of 26,001 lbs GVWR or more (straight trucks, dump trucks, buses) towing under 10,000 lbs. Common for local and municipal work across Ohio.
Class A CDL
Combination vehicles of 26,001 lbs GCWR or more towing over 10,000 lbs, the tractor-trailer licence. The widest job market in Ohio's freight corridors and the highest pay ceiling.
N / T endorsements
N (tank vehicles) and T (doubles and triples, Class A only) each add a knowledge test at the BMV, around $12 per endorsement.
H / X endorsements
H (hazardous materials) requires a knowledge test plus a TSA security threat assessment ($86.50, with fingerprints), and must be renewed. X combines tank and hazmat.
P / S endorsements

Pass a DOT physical and get your medical certificate
See a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry. The DOT physical checks vision, hearing, blood pressure and general fitness, and the certificate is normally valid for 24 months (less with conditions such as hypertension). You will need it before the BMV issues your Commercial Learner's Permit and you must keep it current thereafter.

Take the general knowledge test at a BMV driver exam station, plus the combination-vehicles and air-brakes tests for a Class A. Ohio requires 80% to pass. Present your Ohio driver licence, proof of identity and residency, and your DOT medical certificate, and pay the permit fee. The CLP is what lets you train on public roads with a CDL holder beside you.

Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
Federal rule has required this for every first-time Class A or Class B applicant since 7 February 2022. Enrol with a school listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, complete the theory and behind-the-wheel curriculum, and the school reports your completion electronically to FMCSA. The Ohio BMV will not schedule or allow your skills test without that electronic proof matching the class and endorsement on your CLP.

Federal rule requires a minimum 14-day holding period between CLP issuance and the skills test. The test has three segments: the pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control (backing manoeuvres) and the on-road drive, taken in the class of vehicle you intend to drive. Ohio administers it through BMV driver exam stations and approved third-party testers, and each segment is pass or fail.

Does an Ohio cdl driver license transfer to other states?
A CDL is valid in all 50 states, so there is no reciprocity to obtain in order to drive. What federal law does require is that you hold only one CDL and that you transfer it to your new state within 30 days of establishing residency. Moving to Ohio, the BMV will normally issue an Ohio CDL against your out-of-state licence without re-testing, but you must surrender the old licence, show a current DOT medical certificate, and a hazmat endorsement requires a fresh TSA threat assessment. What is on the Ohio CDL knowledge and skills tests?
There is no trade-code exam. The knowledge tests are closed-book multiple-choice tests drawn from the Ohio Commercial Driver Licence Manual, which follows the FMCSA model: general knowledge for every applicant, plus combination vehicles and air brakes for a Class A, and a separate written test for each endorsement you want. Ohio requires 80% to pass. How to verify an Ohio cdl driver license

Yes, if this is your first Class A or Class B CDL, or your first hazmat, passenger or school-bus endorsement, and your Commercial Learner's Permit was issued on or after 7 February 2022.
