A chemical operator runs the process units that convert raw materials into chemical products. That includes lining up and charging reactors, controlling distillation columns and other equipment, monitoring temperatures, pressures, flows and levels from a control board and out in the field, taking samples for the lab, and safely starting up, shutting down and troubleshooting the unit. The work is done on rotating shifts in a facility governed by strict process-safety rules, and much of the skill is in keeping a running process within its safe operating limits and reacting correctly when it drifts.

Most operators start with a high-school diploma or equivalent and are hired into a trainee or field-operator role, then complete the employer's structured on-the-job training and unit qualification program. A two-year process-technology (PTEC) associate degree is increasingly preferred, especially on the Gulf Coast, and speeds the path to the higher-paid board role. New operators learn the process-safety rules under OSHA PSM, qualify on one unit at a time, and later qualify on the distributed control system to run the process from the console.

Process Safety Management (PSM) is the OSHA standard at 29 CFR 1910.119 that governs facilities handling highly hazardous chemicals above threshold quantities. It requires process hazard analyses, written operating procedures, safe operating limits, management of change, mechanical integrity programs and thorough operator training and emergency planning. For a chemical operator it shapes the whole job: procedures must be followed, changes are controlled, and operating a unit means working within the documented safe limits the PSM program defines. It is a workplace-safety regulation, not a personal certificate.

BLS reports the Chemical Equipment Operators and Tenders category (SOC 51-9011) at an OEWS May 2025 median of $58,040 a year, or $27.90 an hour, with $37,440 at the 10th percentile and $92,250 at the 90th. Those base figures understate real take-home for many operators, because rotating-shift differentials, turnaround overtime and call-outs add substantially on top. Board-qualified console operators and lead operators at refineries and large chemical plants sit toward and beyond the upper end of that range.

No four-year degree is required. The baseline is typically a high-school diploma or equivalent plus the employer's training and unit qualifications. That said, a two-year process-technology (PTEC) associate degree from a community college has become a strong advantage — many Gulf Coast chemical and refining employers prefer it, and it shortens the path to the higher-paid board-operator role. A chemical-engineering bachelor's degree points toward an engineering career rather than operating and is not the route into this job.

A field operator works outside on the unit — walking rounds, lining up valves, taking samples, checking equipment and executing tasks the board operator directs. A board (or console) operator sits at the distributed control system, monitors and controls the whole unit's temperatures, pressures and flows, makes the process moves, and coordinates the field crew. Board work carries more responsibility and pays more, and qualifying on the console is usually the single biggest advancement step in an operator's career.
