An NDT technician examines materials, welds and components for discontinuities without damaging them. Depending on the methods they hold, that means ultrasonic scanning for internal flaws and wall thickness, radiography for volumetric imaging, magnetic particle and liquid penetrant for surface-breaking cracks, eddy current for tubing and conductive surfaces, and visual testing. Each examination involves calibrating equipment against reference standards, scanning to a written procedure, evaluating indications against acceptance criteria, and issuing a formal report.

You accumulate method-specific training hours and documented on-the-job experience, then pass general, specific and practical examinations for each method and level. Training comes from NDT schools or from an employer's own program, and the certification itself is normally issued by the employer under its written practice following ASNT's SNT-TC-1A recommended practice. Because certification is employer-issued, changing companies usually means having your qualifications reviewed and re-endorsed rather than simply transferring.

Level II is the working tier of the ASNT scheme. A Level I technician performs specific calibrations and tests under direction and records results; a Level II is qualified to set up and calibrate equipment, interpret and evaluate results against applicable codes and specifications, and organize and report on the work — effectively running examinations independently. Level III writes and approves procedures, establishes techniques and certifies Level I and II personnel. Requirements are method-specific, so a technician is Level II in ultrasonics, not in NDT generally.

BLS publishes no separate NDT occupation, so the reference point is Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers (SOC 51-9061) at an OEWS May 2025 median of $48,570 a year, or $23.35 an hour, with a range of $35,510 to $77,860. That code is dominated by general manufacturing inspection. Field NDT technicians on refinery, pipeline and power outage work typically earn above it once per diem, overtime and multi-method certification are taken into account.

Most technicians begin with penetrant and magnetic particle testing, which require the fewest training hours and give quick exposure to acceptance criteria and reporting. Ultrasonics is the method that most changes earning power and demands the most training, so it usually comes next. Radiography pays well but brings a licensing, dosimetry and controlled-area regime under the NRC or an Agreement State that many technicians deliberately avoid. Eddy current is more specialized and concentrated in tubing and aerospace work.

In the field-services segment, yes — and that is where much of the pay is. Refinery turnarounds, pipeline projects and power-plant outages are scheduled events that pull technicians in from across a region for weeks at a time, on twelve-hour shifts and often at night, with per diem on top of an hourly rate. In-house manufacturing and aerospace NDT roles are the alternative: fixed location, regular hours, lower total earnings but a schedule you can plan a life around.
