A commercial electrician installs and maintains the electrical distribution in non-residential buildings: three-phase services, switchgear and panelboards, conduit and cable tray systems, lighting and lighting controls, motor circuits, and fire alarm rough-in. The work is laid out from engineered drawings and installed to the National Electrical Code as adopted locally.

Inside wireman is the IBEW classification for electricians who install and maintain the electrical systems inside commercial and industrial buildings, as distinct from outside linemen who work on utility distribution and from residential wiremen. The inside wireman apprenticeship is the longest and broadest of the three programs.

BLS reports all electricians together at a $63,190 median for May 2025, with $42,640 at the 10th percentile and $108,510 at the 90th. Commercial inside wiremen generally sit above the middle of that range, and negotiated union scales in high-cost metropolitan areas can exceed it substantially.

Commercial work centres on building distribution - services, panelboards, lighting and controls in occupied buildings. Industrial work centres on process equipment: motor control centres, variable-frequency drives, instrumentation and plant power, often in hazardous-classified locations under NEC Chapter 5. BLS counts both under the same occupation code.

NFPA 70E, the standard for electrical safety in the workplace, sets the safe work practices, approach boundaries and PPE requirements for energized work, and OSHA enforces the general duty to protect workers from those hazards. In practice, employers on commercial and industrial work require documented 70E training before any switching or energized troubleshooting.
