Apply to a registered glazing apprenticeship, either through an IUPAT glazing local or an open-shop contractor association. These run about four years, require a high school diploma or equivalent and age 18, and combine roughly 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job work with related classroom instruction in glass types, framing systems, sealants and rigging. You earn a percentage of journeyman scale that steps up each period. Some glaziers instead enter residential glass shops directly and learn on the job, but that route rarely reaches commercial curtain wall work.

The OEWS May 2025 median for Glaziers (SOC 47-2121) is $57,080 a year, or $27.44 an hour, ranging from $37,300 at the 10th percentile to $89,790 at the 90th. Commercial glazing on curtain wall and storefront, particularly under a union agreement in a large metro, sits in the upper half; residential window and shower-door installation and retail glass shops populate the lower. Foremen and superintendents on facade packages account for most of the top decile.

Not for the individual. Unlike electricians and plumbers, glaziers hold no state journeyman or master licence anywhere in the United States. What is licensed in some states is the contracting business — California, for example, has a specialty glazing contractor classification held by the company. The practical credential for a worker is completion of a registered apprenticeship, plus the safety qualifications a site demands: OSHA 10 or 30, aerial lift training and rigging or signalling certification.

Scope and system. A glazier in the commercial sense installs engineered glazing systems — curtain wall, storefront, entrances, structural silicone assemblies and interior glass — working from shop drawings with anchor calculations and wind-load requirements behind them. A residential window installer replaces manufactured window units in existing openings, a narrower task usually performed by carpenters or a remodelling crew. BLS counts both under 47-2121, which is part of why the median spans so wide a range.

The International Building Code and International Residential Code set the rules that matter: safety-glazing requirements identifying hazardous locations such as doors, tub and shower enclosures and glazing near walking surfaces, where tempered or laminated glass is mandatory; wind-load and impact-resistance provisions that in coastal jurisdictions require missile-tested assemblies; and fire-rated glazing limits. Beyond code, each proprietary framing system carries manufacturer installation details that the warranty depends on.

It carries two serious hazard classes at once — falls and heavy, sharp material. Curtain wall installation happens at leading edges and from swing stages, so OSHA 1926 Subpart M fall protection and Subpart L scaffold rules structure the day, and Subpart CC governs the crane picks that deliver units. Insulated glass units routinely weigh several hundred pounds, which is why vacuum lifters, rated cups and rehearsed handling moves are standard rather than optional. Cuts from broken edges remain the most common injury.
