A continuous improvement manager owns and sustains an organization's lean improvement program. That means setting the improvement roadmap, running and facilitating kaizen events, embedding daily management and visual metrics, leading value-stream improvement, and — most importantly — coaching supervisors and operators to identify and solve problems themselves. The role is judged less on any single project and more on whether a culture of steady, sustained improvement takes hold and delivers measurable operational and financial gains over time.

The common path is coming up through operations, engineering or quality, personally leading improvement on the floor before leading the program. You build depth in the lean toolkit — value-stream mapping, standard work, kaizen, A3 problem-solving and daily management — and, critically, the coaching and change-leadership skill to work through other people. A Six Sigma Black Belt is a project specialist who leads individual DMAIC projects full-time using statistical analysis to reduce variation. A continuous improvement manager is a leadership role that owns the whole improvement system — usually lean-based — and drives it through coaching, culture and daily management rather than personally running belts. Many CI managers hold a belt, and the roles overlap, but the Black Belt goes deep on statistical projects while the CI manager goes broad on sustaining an improvement program across an operation.

BLS has no separate figure; CI managers fall under Management Analysts (SOC 13-1111), which shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $101,860 a year, or $48.97 an hour, with $60,640 at the 10th percentile and $171,640 at the 90th. That code pools management consulting broadly. Actual pay tracks the manager's delivered and sustained results, the scope led — single site versus multi-site — and the industry, with operational-excellence directors reaching the upper end and executive bands beyond it.

For people who like operations, problem-solving and developing others, it is a strong and growing field, because manufacturers and increasingly healthcare, distribution and service organizations treat a permanent improvement function as a standing investment rather than a one-off initiative. The ladder runs to operational-excellence director with executive pay. The trade-offs are that success depends on influence rather than authority, gains have to be sustained not just launched, and the role can be blamed when a program stalls for reasons outside the CI team's control.

Not necessarily. Continuous-improvement leadership hires heavily on lean capability, coaching skill and a record of sustained results, and many CI managers lead effectively with lean certification rather than a Six Sigma belt. A Green or Black Belt helps, especially where the program has a strong statistical component, and ASQ credentials are valued, but the defining qualifications are the ability to run a lean management system and change how an operation solves problems, which a certificate alone does not prove.
