Most people arrive from one of three directions. The academic route is a two-year associate degree in electronics, mechatronics or instrumentation technology, which covers circuits, motor control, sensors and PLC programming. The trade route is an electrical apprenticeship followed by specialization into controls, which produces technicians with unusually strong power fundamentals. The third is military electronics training. In all three cases the differentiator afterwards is depth in a specific PLC or building-automation platform rather than the entry credential.

BLS has no controls-technician code, so the honest reference is the broad Electrical and Electronics Repairers, Commercial and Industrial Equipment category (SOC 49-2094): an OEWS May 2025 median of $74,090 a year, $35.62 an hour, from $46,840 at the 10th percentile to $105,590 at the 90th. Because that code also contains general electronics repair work, controls specialists with programming and integration ability commonly sit in the upper half rather than at the median.

An electrician installs and terminates the power and control wiring to the National Electrical Code and is licensed by a state or municipal board to do it. A controls technician takes over where that wiring is complete: configuring and troubleshooting the PLC or DDC logic, drive parameters, sensors, and the networks tying them together. There is no licence for controls work itself. Many of the best controls technicians hold an electrical background, because faults frequently turn out to be power problems wearing a logic costume.

None are legally required. The vendor-neutral credential that carries recognition is ISA's Certified Control Systems Technician, offered at Levels I through III with documented experience requirements and an examination. Alongside it, vendor certifications matter commercially: Rockwell Automation and Siemens on the industrial side, and Tridium Niagara on the building-automation side, where certification is often written into contracts. NFPA 70E arc-flash training is effectively mandatory as an employer requirement for anyone opening energized panels.

Related but distinct labor markets. Building automation controls HVAC, lighting and energy systems in commercial buildings, running DDC controllers over BACnet with supervisory platforms like Niagara or Metasys, and the work is heavily commissioning and service oriented. Industrial controls run manufacturing processes on PLCs over EtherNet/IP or Profibus, with downtime measured in lost production. The troubleshooting instincts transfer well, the platforms and protocols mostly do not, and pay tends to run higher on the industrial and integration side.

The BLS projection of -0.8% for 2024–2034 reflects the broad electronics-repair category, not controls work specifically. Repairing discrete electronic equipment has genuinely shrunk — boards are replaced rather than fixed, and much equipment is disposable. What has grown inside the same category is systems work: programming, integration and commissioning of automated plants and buildings. That is why the headline number and the hiring experience of controls specialists point in different directions, and why platform and networking depth matters so much.
