The role spans installation, commissioning, testing and service. Installation means running fire-rated cable, mounting and addressing initiating devices and notification appliances, and terminating at the control panel. Commissioning means programming the panel's input-output logic and proving it with the authority having jurisdiction — including elevator recall, HVAC shutdown and door release. Service means periodic inspection and testing to NFPA 72 frequencies, troubleshooting trouble and ground-fault conditions, and documenting everything on inspection forms.

NICET is the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, and its Fire Alarm Systems program is the recognized certification ladder for the trade. It runs four levels, each requiring passing examinations on code and system knowledge together with documented work experience verified by a supervisor. It is a professional certification, not a government licence, but many states and many project specifications make a specified NICET level a legal or contractual condition of doing the work.

The OEWS May 2025 median for Security and Fire Alarm Systems Installers (SOC 49-2098) is $60,070 a year, or $28.88 an hour, with $38,800 at the 10th percentile and $81,150 at the 90th. The code pools fire alarm with security and access-control installation, and within it fire alarm work generally prices higher because of the code liability, the licensing requirements and the NICET certification that serious employers expect. Service and inspection technicians add on-call premiums.

It sits alongside it rather than inside it. Fire alarm circuits are power-limited and governed by NFPA 72 plus Article 760 of the National Electrical Code, and in many states the work is licensed under a separate fire alarm or low-voltage classification administered by the fire marshal rather than the electrical board. Some jurisdictions do require an electrical licence for portions of the installation, and many electricians hold fire alarm certifications, but the code knowledge and the credential path are distinct.

Because the testing is mandatory, not optional. NFPA 72 sets required frequencies for inspecting and testing initiating devices, notification appliances, control units and secondary power — annually for most components, more often for some — and the authority having jurisdiction can demand the documentation. That creates recurring, contractually scheduled work in every existing building with a system, which insulates the trade from construction downturns in a way that install-only trades are not.
