What is an electrical contractor license, and how do you get one?
An electrical contractor licence authorises a business to offer, bid and contract electrical work to the public. It is distinct from the personal licences the workforce holds: in nearly every state the company must designate a qualifying individual β normally a master electrician β who is responsible for the work performed under the licence. Applicants also file a surety bond, carry liability and workers' compensation insurance, and in many states pass a business and law examination. Most states license contractors directly; a few leave it to cities and counties. First-line construction supervisors, the category electrical contractors are counted in, earn a $79,920 median.
- Hold or employ a master electrician to act as the qualifying individual.
- Register the business entity and obtain a federal tax identification number.
- Pass the business and law examination where your state requires one.
- File the surety bond and provide proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance.
- Apply to the state board or local authority, then renew and keep the qualifier in place.
How to get an electrical contractor license
- 1
Secure a qualifying master electrician
Either hold the master electrician licence yourself or employ one as an owner, officer or full-time employee. This is the single requirement everything else depends on, and most states limit how many companies one master may qualify, so a part-time name on the application will not survive scrutiny.
- 2
Set up the business properly
Register the entity with the state, obtain a federal tax identification number, and put accounting and payroll in place. Several states review financial statements or apply a minimum net worth test before issuing a contractor licence, so the business needs to be substantively real before you apply.
- 3
Pass the business and law examination
Where your state requires it, sit the examination covering contract formation, licensing regulations, lien and payment law, employment and tax obligations, insurance, estimating and financial management. It is usually open book against the state contractor manual, and it is separate from the technical electrical examination the qualifier has already passed.
- 4
File the bond and the insurance certificates
Obtain a surety bond in the amount your licensing authority sets and file it, along with certificates of general liability insurance and workers' compensation cover. These must be kept continuously in force: a lapse suspends the licence, and reinstatement is slower than most contractors expect.
- 5
Apply, then keep the licence and the qualifier in place
Submit the application to the state board or, where licensing is municipal, to each city and county you will work in. After issue, renew on the authority's cycle, keep the qualifier's continuing education current to the latest National Electrical Code edition, and notify the board promptly if the qualifying individual leaves β most states allow only a short window to replace them.
Electrical Contractor license requirements
The requirements are commercial as much as technical, because this licence regulates a business rather than a tradesperson. To license an electrical contracting company you generally need:
Qualifying individual
A licensed master electrician who is an owner, officer or full-time employee and takes responsibility for the electrical work performed under the licence. Most states restrict how many licences one individual may qualify, often to a single company.
Surety bond
A bond filed with the licensing authority to protect consumers and, in some states, to secure payment obligations. The amount is set by the state or local authority and differs substantially, so confirm the current figure rather than budgeting from an average.
Insurance
General liability coverage at the minimum the authority sets, plus workers' compensation insurance where you employ staff. Certificates are usually filed with the application and must be maintained continuously.
Business and law examination
Many states require an examination covering contract law, licensing regulations, lien law, employment and tax obligations, estimating and business finance β separate from the technical electrical examination the qualifier already passed.
How much an electrical contractor license costs
Fees are the small part; bonding and insurance are the real cost and they recur annually. The lines to budget for:
The recurring costs β bond premium, general liability and workers' compensation insurance β dominate and scale with payroll and revenue, which is why licence fees are a poor guide to what contracting actually costs. Amounts are set per state and should be confirmed with the board and an insurance broker.
The electrical contractor license exam
The technical examination for this licence family is taken by the qualifying individual at master electrician level and is based on the National Electrical Code with state amendments. What the contractor licence itself usually adds is a business and law examination: contract formation, licensing regulations, lien and payment law, employment and tax obligations, insurance requirements, estimating and financial management. It is typically open book against the state's contractor manual and statutes, and is administered through a testing vendor. Several states also review financial statements or require a minimum net worth before issuing the licence, which is not an examination but functions as a gate in the same way.
How long it takes to get licensed
The long part is producing a qualifying master electrician β years of apprenticeship, journeyman work and master examination. Once one is in place, licensing the business takes months.
Electrical Contractor license types: the full ladder
It helps to see where the contractor licence sits relative to the personal licences underneath it, because they are frequently confused.
Apprentice / journeyman workforce
The personal licences held by the people doing the work. Necessary for the crew, but no combination of them authorises a business to contract work to the public.
Master electrician (qualifying individual)
The personal licence the contractor licence hangs on. The qualifier takes responsibility for the electrical work performed under the business licence and must usually be an owner, officer or full-time employee.
Electrical contractor licence
The business licence itself: authorises the company to offer, bid, contract and pull permits for electrical work. Requires the qualifier, the bond and insurance, and in most states a business and law examination.
Limited or specialty contractor licence
Many states issue restricted classes β residential-only, sign, limited energy, or value-capped licences β with lighter requirements than the unlimited electrical contractor licence.
Local contractor registration
Cities and counties frequently require their own registration and permit privileges even where the state licenses, so contractors working across a metropolitan area often hold several.
Bond and insurance filings
Not a licence class but a continuing condition of one: the surety bond and certificates of liability and workers' compensation insurance must remain in force, and a lapse suspends the licence.

Electrical Contractor license reciprocity between states
Contractor licences reciprocate far less freely than personal trade licences. Some states have agreements recognising an out-of-state contractor licence or waiving the trade examination for a qualifier already licensed elsewhere, but the business and law examination, the bond and the insurance filings are almost always state-specific and must be completed again. Where licensing is municipal, each city is a separate application. The practical approach for contractors expanding across state lines is to plan for a new licence in each state, keep the qualifier's credentials portable, and confirm with each board which examinations, if any, it will waive.
Electrical Contractorsalary & job outlook
Electrical contractors are counted by BLS among first-line supervisors of construction and extraction workers, a category with a median of about $79,920 per year ($38.42/hour), though owner earnings depend on the business rather than on a wage and vary far more widely than any published median suggests. Employment in the supervisory category is projected to grow 5.3%, with roughly 74,400 openings a year. See the full electrical contractor salary guide for pay by state, city and experience level.
Electrical Contractor license requirements by state
The key question by state is who issues the licence β a state board or the local jurisdiction β and what bond, insurance and financial requirements attach to it.
Most states license electrical contractors at state level; a minority leave it to cities and counties, which means holding several local licences rather than one. Bond amounts, insurance minimums, financial requirements and the rules on how many licences one qualifying individual may hold are all state-set and change. Confirm with the licensing authority before applying, and with a surety and an insurance broker before budgeting.
