Installers put complete heating and cooling systems into buildings: setting condensers, air handlers, furnaces and rooftop units, running and brazing refrigerant line sets, fabricating and connecting duct and plenums, making the electrical and condensate connections, pressure testing and evacuating the refrigerant circuit, weighing in the charge, and commissioning the system by checking superheat, subcooling and static pressure. On commercial work the same job scales up to VRF systems, rooftop units and rigging.

Most start as install helpers with a contractor, learning by carrying equipment and assisting on brazing and duct work, and some enter through a six-month to two-year trade-school program or a Registered Apprenticeship. EPA Section 608 certification is required before handling refrigerant and is normally obtained early. From there, competence is built by running progressively more of the install solo until a technician can complete a full changeout and start it up unaided.

The OEWS May 2025 median for Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers (SOC 49-9021) is $61,010 a year, or $29.33 an hour, from $40,050 at the 10th percentile to $95,210 at the 90th. That code pools install and service work. Install pay is often structured with piece-rate or per-job bonuses on residential changeouts, so a fast, clean crew can earn well above the equivalent hourly figure during a busy cooling season.

Yes, if they open a refrigerant circuit — which nearly every installer does. Section 608 of the Clean Air Act makes it illegal to purchase refrigerant or service, maintain or dispose of equipment containing it without certification. Type I covers small appliances, Type II high-pressure systems including residential split systems and heat pumps, Type III low-pressure chillers, and Universal covers all three. The certification is obtained by exam and does not expire.

Installers put in new systems; service technicians diagnose and repair existing ones. The install side is more physical and more schedulable — heavy equipment, duct work, brazing, predictable day lengths — and often paid by the job. The service side is diagnostic, involves electrical troubleshooting, on-call rotations and customer-facing pressure during heat waves, and generally requires broader knowledge of controls and failure modes. Many technicians start on install and move to service later.

The demand numbers are among the best in the building trades: 8.1% projected change for 2024-2034 with roughly 40,100 openings a year, driven by an ageing installed base, heat pump conversion and the refrigerant transition under the AIM Act, which is putting new A2L equipment into the field and requiring updated handling practice. The trade also has an unusually short route to self-employment, since residential contracting has low capital requirements relative to most construction businesses.
