Most technicians start with a six-month to two-year HVACR program at a technical college or enter a registered apprenticeship of roughly 3,000 to 5,000 hours combining paid work with classroom instruction. Either way, EPA Section 608 certification is required before you can legally handle refrigerant, and most programs test for it during training. Employers then start you on planned maintenance and simple repairs, moving you onto solo diagnostic calls once you can read a system's electrical and refrigeration behaviour reliably.

BLS reports service and installation together under SOC 49-9021 at an OEWS May 2025 median of $61,010 a year, $29.33 an hour, from $40,050 at the 10th percentile to $95,210 at the 90th. Residential service in low-cost markets sits in the lower half; commercial rooftop, chiller and supermarket refrigeration service, plus union mechanical contracting, sits in the upper. On-call rotations and summer overtime add meaningfully, and many residential companies pay a commission on quoted repairs and replacements.

You need it to open a refrigerant circuit or buy regulated refrigerant, which covers most service work. Section 608 of the Clean Air Act requires certification through an EPA-approved organisation in one of four types: Type I for small appliances, Type II for high-pressure equipment including residential split systems, Type III for low-pressure chillers, and Universal for all three. The certification does not expire. You can legally do ductwork, electrical and airflow work without it, but not much of the diagnostic job.

Installation crews put in new equipment — setting units, running line sets and ductwork, making electrical connections and commissioning the system, often on new construction or planned replacements with predictable scope. Service technicians work on equipment that already exists and has failed, which makes diagnosis the core skill and customer interaction unavoidable. Installers tend to be paid on production and volume; service technicians on diagnostic capability and, in residential, on quoted repair value. BLS counts both in the same code.

A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32 are the lower-global-warming replacements being phased in under the AIM Act as high-GWP HFCs are stepped down. They are classed as mildly flammable, which brings new requirements: revised charge limits by room volume, integrated leak detection and mitigation in equipment built to UL 60335-2-40, different service tools and cylinder handling, and updated mechanical-code provisions. Technicians need manufacturer or association retraining, and EPA 608 material has been updated to cover them.

It depends entirely on where you work, which is unusual even by trade standards. Some states license HVAC contractors and journeyman mechanics with experience minimums and written exams; others delegate licensing to counties and municipalities; a few impose no state-level HVAC licence at all and rely on general contractor registration. What is uniform is the federal EPA 608 requirement and, where you touch gas piping or electrical, the applicable fuel-gas and electrical code permits. Check the state licensing board before assuming your credential travels.
