What is an insurance agent license, and how do you get one?
Every state licenses insurance producers through its insurance department. You choose the lines of authority you will sell β commonly property and casualty, life, health, or personal lines β complete the pre-licensing education your state requires, pass the state examination for each line, submit fingerprints and a background check, and apply. A licence alone does not let you place business: you must also be appointed by each insurer whose products you sell. Insurance sales agents earn a $62,280 median.
- Choose the lines of authority you intend to sell.
- Complete your state's pre-licensing education for each line.
- Pass the state examination and submit fingerprints.
- Apply for the licence, then obtain appointments from your carriers.
- Add non-resident licences as needed and complete continuing education each cycle.
How to get an insurance agent license
- 1
Choose your lines of authority
Decide what you will actually sell β property and casualty, life, health, or personal lines. Each is licensed separately with its own examination and pre-licensing requirement, so the choice determines your route and your costs.
- 2
Complete pre-licensing education
Take the approved course for each line, delivered online or in a classroom. Many states require a set number of hours before you may sit the examination, and the state-law content in these courses is what most candidates need most.
- 3
Pass the state examination
Sit the test with your state's contracted testing vendor. It covers general insurance principles, the policy types and provisions for your line, and the state's insurance code including producer duties, unfair trade practices and ethics. Prepare from the state's own outline, not only national materials.
- 4
Submit fingerprints and apply
Complete the fingerprint and criminal background check most states require, then file the licence application with the state insurance department and pay the fee. Approval is normally quick once the background check clears.
- 5
Get appointed and keep the licence current
Obtain an appointment from each insurer whose products you will sell β without it you cannot write their business. Then add non-resident licences through the National Insurance Producer Registry as your market grows, and complete continuing education, including required ethics hours, each renewal cycle.
Insurance Agent license requirements
Requirements are set by each state insurance department and are broadly consistent nationwide. To be licensed as a producer you need:
Pre-licensing education
Many states require a set number of hours of approved education per line of authority before you may sit the examination, delivered online or in a classroom by approved providers.
State examination
A test per line of authority covering general insurance principles, policy provisions and state insurance law and regulation, administered by a contracted testing vendor.
Background check
Fingerprinting and a criminal background check in most states, with the federal bar on employment in insurance following certain felony convictions unless written consent is obtained.
Carrier appointment
A separate authorisation from each insurer whose products you sell, filed with the state. The licence permits you to be appointed; the appointment permits you to write that insurer's business.
How much an insurance agent license costs
Costs are low and frequently employer-funded. The lines to budget for:
This is an inexpensive licence to obtain, and agencies frequently fund pre-licensing courses and examination fees for new hires. Fees are set by each state insurance department and by the testing vendor.
The insurance agent license exam
Each line of authority has its own examination, administered by a contracted testing vendor. Content divides into two parts: general insurance principles and the policy types and provisions specific to that line β dwelling and auto forms for property and casualty, policy structures and riders for life, plans and government programmes for health β and the state's own insurance code, covering producer duties, licensing rules, unfair trade practices and ethics. Passing marks are set by each state and are commonly around 70%. The examinations are closed book and are not conceptually difficult, but the state-law section catches candidates who prepare only from national materials rather than the state's own outline.
How long it takes to get licensed
Two to six weeks from starting a pre-licensing course to holding a licence, with fingerprint clearance usually the slowest part.
Insurance Agent license types: the full ladder
Insurance licensing is organised by line of authority and by role rather than by seniority, and the distinctions determine what you may sell and for whom.
Unlicensed customer service staff
May service accounts and handle administration but may not solicit, negotiate or sell insurance, which is the line state law draws.
Personal lines producer
A limited property and casualty licence covering personal auto, homeowners and similar consumer products, with a lighter examination than full P&C.
Property and casualty producer
The full P&C licence covering personal and commercial property, liability, auto and related lines.
Life and health producer
Authorises life insurance, annuities, disability and health products, with separate examinations in most states for life and for health.
Carrier appointment
Not a licence but the authorisation from each insurer that lets you actually write its business, filed with the state and terminable by the insurer.
Non-resident licence
Issued by other states on the strength of your resident licence, generally without further examination, through the National Insurance Producer Registry.
Professional designations
Credentials such as CIC, CPCU and CLU sit above the licence and signal expertise, but they confer no additional legal authority to sell.
Producer licence vs Carrier appointment: insurance agent license
Insurance Agent license reciprocity between states
Producer licensing is among the most reciprocal regimes in the country. Once you hold a resident licence in good standing, other states will generally issue a non-resident licence in the same lines without further examination or pre-licensing education, and applications run through the National Insurance Producer Registry rather than fifty separate processes. Two caveats matter: your non-resident licences depend on your resident licence remaining active, so a lapse cascades, and continuing-education compliance in your resident state usually satisfies the others but not always. Confirm each state's rule at renewal.
Insurance Agentsalary & job outlook
Insurance sales agents earn a median of about $62,280 per year ($29.94/hour), though earnings vary far more than that median suggests because most agents are paid on commission and renewal income compounds over a book of business. Employment is projected to grow 3.7%, with roughly 47,000 openings a year. See the full insurance agent salary guide for pay by state, city and experience level.
Insurance Agent license requirements by state
Every state licenses producers, so what differs is pre-licensing hour requirements, the examination outline, continuing-education rules and fees.
All states and the District of Columbia license insurance producers. Differences lie in pre-licensing education hours, examination content on state law, continuing-education requirements including ethics hours, and fee schedules. Non-resident licensing is generally straightforward through the National Insurance Producer Registry. Confirm with the state insurance department before applying.
