Direct Answer

How much do insurance agents make in 2026?

Insurance sales agents earn a national median of $62,280 a year, or $29.94 an hour, according to BLS OEWS May 2025 for SOC 41-3021, with the bottom 10% near $37,330 and the top 10% at $138,140 across 479,100 agents. Two caveats have to travel with that number. First, OEWS is a survey of employer-reported wages for wage-and-salary workers, so self-employed independent agents and agency owners are outside the sample entirely, and they are a large share of the profession. Second, commission is reported inconsistently: some carriers report it as part of the wage, some do not, and none of it captures renewal income built over years. The result is a median that describes a salaried or draw-plus-commission captive agent reasonably well and describes an established independent agency owner not at all. What actually determines earnings here is the book: the lines written, the persistency of the business, and whether renewals belong to you or to the carrier. Life and health, property and casualty, and commercial lines all pay on different commission structures. Every state requires a producer licence by line of authority, and appointment by each carrier you represent. BLS projects 3.7% growth through 2034 with roughly 47,000 openings a year. β†’ Full insurance agent career guide, career path, credentials & placement β†’

Key takeaways
  • Insurance Agents earn a national median $62,280/yr ($29.94/hr) (BLS OEWS May 2025, SOC 41-3021); the P10 to P90 range is $37,330 to $138,140.
  • OEWS covers wage-and-salary workers, so self-employed independent agents and agency owners are not in this sample; the median describes an employed agent, not the profession's full earnings distribution.
  • Renewal commission is the real compensation mechanic. Whether the book of business and its renewals belong to the agent or the carrier is the difference between the middle and the top of this band.
  • Every state requires a producer licence by line of authority plus carrier appointment, and adding lines is the most direct way an employed agent raises earning capacity.

Methodology & Sources

How the numbers on this page are built

Published (BLS): BLS OEWS May 2025, SOC 41-3021, United States national estimate. Public, methodologically rigorous, but sampled on a rolling 3-year basis and published ~10 months after collection β€” so it reflects wages that are already 1–2 years old by the time you read them.

Level and certification medians: distributed across the published BLS percentile range for this SOC code (P10 through P90) according to the credential tiers this occupation actually hires at. They are modeled reference points, not separately surveyed wages.

State and metro figures: modeled β€” the BLS national median multiplied by the GlobalCybers state wage index, and for metros by the published metro index for that state. They are estimates of local pay, not BLS state or metropolitan-area observations, and are labelled as modeled in the tables below.

No verified placement sample:GlobalCybers does not yet publish a placement median for this role, so no "verified" figure appears anywhere on this page.

By State

Which states pay insurance agents the most in 2026?

These are modeled state estimates, not BLS state observations: the national median for SOC 41-3021 scaled by the GlobalCybers state wage index. Agent earnings depend far more on the premium and product mix available locally than on a general wage index, and licensing is state by state, so treat this table as cost-of-living context and check the licensing requirements for the state you intend to write in.

By Metro

Which cities pay insurance agents the most?

Metro figures are modeled, national median times state wage index times published metro index, not BLS metropolitan observations. Commercial and benefits business concentrates in large metros, which does genuinely lift producer earnings there, but for a reason this cost-of-living model does not actually measure.

FAQ

Insurance Agent Salary, Frequently Asked Questions

How much do insurance agents make in 2026?

BLS OEWS May 2025 reports a national median of $62,280 a year, or $29.94 an hour, for SOC 41-3021, with a P10 to P90 range of $37,330 to $138,140 across 479,100 employed agents. Self-employed agents and agency owners are outside this survey entirely.

Is insurance agent pay commission-based?

For most agents, largely yes, though the structure varies. New producers commonly start on a salary or a recoverable draw against commission, captive agents earn a mix of new-business and renewal commission set by the carrier, and independent agents earn commission negotiated with each carrier they represent. OEWS captures employer-reported wages, which includes commission inconsistently and misses renewal income built over years.

Do independent agents earn more than captive agents?

Often, but with real risk attached. The independent agent owns the book, keeps the renewals and can move business between carriers, which compounds over time; the captive agent trades that ownership for carrier-supplied leads, brand, training and a floor under income. Neither picture is well represented by a single median, which is why the honest answer is that the ownership question matters more than the income comparison.

What licence do you need to sell insurance?

A producer licence issued by the state, held by line of authority, so property and casualty, life, and accident and health are separate authorities with separate exams. You also need an appointment from each carrier whose products you sell, and continuing education to keep the licence in force. Non-resident licences let you write in additional states.
