What is an master plumber license, and how do you get one?
A master plumber licence is issued by a state plumbing board to a plumber who has held a journeyman licence for the period the state requires β commonly one to four years β and passed a master examination covering the adopted plumbing code in greater depth plus code administration and, in many states, business and law. The master licence carries permit and supervision authority and is what qualifies a plumbing contractor licence. Plumbers earn a $63,800 median, with masters and contractors above it.
- Hold an active journeyman licence for the period your state requires.
- Apply to the plumbing board with verified licensed experience.
- Pass the master examination on the adopted code.
- Use the licence to pull permits and supervise journeymen.
- Qualify a plumbing contractor licence if you will run a business.
How to get a master plumber license
- 1
Hold and work under a journeyman licence
Master eligibility runs from the date of journeyman licensure, so keep that licence continuously active β a lapse can complicate or reset the qualifying period in some states.
- 2
Confirm your state's qualifying period and evidence
Boards commonly require one to four years at journeyman level, and some want documented experience of particular system types. Check what evidence is expected before applying.
- 3
Apply with verification of licensed experience
Submit your journeyman licence history and employer verification of the work performed under it, with the board's fee and any background check the state requires at this level.
- 4
Pass the master examination
Sit the open-book examination on the adopted code: drainage and vent design, water supply sizing, storm drainage, gas systems, plus code administration and any business and law section. Practise multi-step sizing calculations with the correct edition.
- 5
Use the authority, and decide about contracting
Once licensed you can pull permits, supervise journeymen and carry compliance responsibility. To run a business, qualify a plumbing contractor licence and arrange bond and insurance, then keep up the heavier master continuing-education requirement.
Master Plumber license requirements
Requirements centre on time already licensed rather than raw hours. To qualify for a master licence you need:
Journeyman experience
A period holding an active journeyman plumber licence β commonly one to four years depending on the state β with documented work performed at that level.
Master examination
A deeper examination on the adopted International or Uniform Plumbing Code: system design and sizing, complex drainage and venting, gas systems, code administration, and in many states business and law.
Verification and fee
Application to the plumbing board with verification of the journeyman licence and work performed, plus the fee and any background check the state requires.
Continuing education
Masters typically carry a heavier continuing-education requirement than journeymen, centred on each new code edition and on code administration.
How much a master plumber license costs
Costs are low relative to what the licence unlocks. The lines to budget for:
Fees stay modest at this level; the real investment is the licensed journeyman years behind the application. Using the licence to qualify a contracting business brings bond and insurance costs with it.
The master plumber license exam
The master examination is open book against the adopted plumbing code, like the journeyman test, but pitched at design rather than installation: drainage, waste and vent system design, water supply sizing and pressure calculations, storm drainage, gas system sizing and, in some states, medical gas. Most boards add code administration β permits, inspections, plan review and the responsibilities that attach to holding the licence β and many include business and law covering contracts, employment obligations and licensing rules. Passing marks tend to be a little higher than at journeyman level and the calculations are longer, so preparation should centre on multi-step sizing work with the correct code edition.
How long it takes to get licensed
One to four years at journeyman level after the apprenticeship, then weeks to license β six to nine years from the start of the trade.
Master Plumber license types: the full ladder
The master licence sits near the top of the personal plumbing ladder, with only the business licence above it.
Journeyman plumber
The prerequisite tier from which master eligibility is counted.
Master plumber
Permit authority, supervision of journeymen and responsibility for code compliance on a job.
Master gas fitter
A separate or endorsed licence in states that regulate gas fitting distinctly from plumbing.
Medical gas installer
ASSE 6010-series certification for medical gas and vacuum systems, held alongside the licence rather than as part of it.
Qualifying individual
The role a master licence plays for a plumbing contractor, taking responsibility for its work; most states allow one master to qualify one business.
Plumbing contractor licence
The business licence itself, requiring the qualifying master plus a surety bond and insurance.
Journeyman vs Master: master plumber license
Master Plumber license reciprocity between states
Master plumbing licences reciprocate less freely than journeyman licences, for two reasons: states are cautious about recognising permit authority earned elsewhere, and the IPC/UPC split means the underlying code may differ. Some boards have agreements with named states requiring an examination-obtained current master licence held for a minimum period; others credit your experience but still require their own examination on the adopted code and administration rules. Where the master licence is being used to qualify a contracting business, expect the business licensing, bond and insurance requirements to be entirely state-specific.
Master Plumbersalary & job outlook
Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters earn a median of about $63,800 per year ($30.67/hour), and master plumbers sit well above that because the licence carries permit authority and is the gateway to running a contracting business. Employment is projected to grow 4.5%, with roughly 44,000 openings a year. See the full master plumber salary guide for pay by state, city and experience level.
Master Plumber license requirements by state
What varies is the journeyman time required, the adopted model code, whether a business section is examined, and whether master licensing sits at state or local level.
Most states issue a master plumber licence, though the qualifying period at journeyman level differs and a few states leave master licensing to cities and counties. Adopted codes split between the IPC and the UPC with state amendments, and master continuing education is generally heavier than journeyman. Confirm with the board.
