A packaging engineer designs and qualifies the packaging that protects and ships a product. That spans structural and material design of primary, secondary and shipping packaging; running ISTA and ASTM distribution tests — drop, vibration, compression, climatic — to prove it survives the supply chain; balancing protection against cost and sustainability targets; and getting the design to run on real filling, case-packing and palletizing equipment. The engineer works across materials science, logistics and marketing, and is judged on packages that arrive intact at the lowest justified cost.

The most direct route is a bachelor's degree in packaging science or packaging engineering from one of the specialized university programs; mechanical, materials, chemical or industrial engineering degrees are common alternatives that cross into the field. From there you build competence in distribution testing (ISTA, ASTM D4169), materials and line qualification, and earn the IoPP Certified Packaging Professional credential. A four-year engineering degree is effectively required for the engineering title. A dedicated packaging-science or packaging-engineering degree is the most aligned, but mechanical, materials, chemical or industrial engineering degrees are widely accepted, with packaging knowledge built on top. Unlike some manufacturing trades that can be entered from the floor, the packaging-engineer role is gated on the degree; technicians and line staff typically need to complete an engineering credential to move into it.

BLS has no packaging-specific figure and no Handbook profile; packaging engineers fall under the residual Engineers, All Other code (SOC 17-2199), which shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $122,930 a year, or $59.10 an hour, with $66,810 at the 10th percentile and $189,950 at the 90th. Because that code pools many engineering specialties, it is a broad proxy rather than a precise number. Pay rises with specialization, the industry served, and progression into packaging-management and director roles.

It is a stable, well-paid engineering field with growing relevance, because e-commerce damage reduction and sustainability mandates have made packaging a strategic cost-and-brand lever rather than an afterthought. Demand is durable across food, consumer goods, pharma and electronics, and the ladder runs to packaging manager and director. The trade-offs are that it is a niche few people know exists, the work sits at the intersection of many disciplines, and it is filed under a residual BLS code so labor-market data on it is imprecise.

A packaging designer, in the graphic sense, works on the visual and branding side — artwork, structure for shelf appeal, and how the package communicates. A packaging engineer works on the technical side — structural integrity, material selection, protection, distribution testing and manufacturability on the line. The roles collaborate closely, since a package has to sell and survive at once, but the engineer is responsible for whether it holds up through drop, vibration and compression and runs on the equipment, while the designer owns how it looks and reads.
