Companies hire trainees with a high school diploma, a clean driving record and a background check, and train them in-house. The band is comparatively tight because the work is route-based and standardized. What moves individual earnings is pay structure rather than percentile: most companies pay base plus commission on service sales and renewals, so route production and termite or exclusion upsells matter more than tenure.

Physically it is moderate but unglamorous: crawlspaces, attics in summer, ladders, and carrying equipment through all weather. The genuine difficulties are chemical exposure management, which the label and personal protective equipment requirements exist to control, and the customer-facing pressure of accounts where the pest keeps returning because the underlying sanitation or structural condition has not been fixed. The compensation is stable, recession-resistant, contract-based demand.

IPM is the standard professional approach: identify the pest correctly, understand its biology and what in the environment is supporting it, then apply the least intrusive effective control — exclusion, sanitation, habitat modification, trapping or targeted baiting — reserving broad pesticide application for where it is genuinely warranted. It is required in many schools, healthcare facilities and food-handling operations, and it is what distinguishes a technician solving a problem from one spraying a perimeter on a calendar.
