A PLC programmer writes, tests and commissions the control programs that run automated equipment. That means building ladder logic, function blocks or structured text on a controller, creating the HMI screens operators use, configuring the drives and networks the machine depends on, and then standing at the equipment during startup to make it all work on real hardware. Much of the job is debugging — finding the intermittent fault, the mis-wired sensor or the logic race that only shows up on the floor.

Most people arrive through an associate degree or technical certificate in automation, mechatronics or electrical technology, or through a maintenance apprenticeship, then learn a major PLC platform in depth. Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 and Siemens TIA Portal dominate, so fluency in one — including its HMI package — is what makes you hireable. The decisive step is commissioning time on live machines, because reading a print, wiring a panel and chasing a fault at 2 a.m. is the part no classroom teaches.

No four-year degree and no state license are required. An associate degree in automation or a maintenance/electrical apprenticeship is the common foundation, and many strong programmers came up entirely on the floor. What employers actually check is platform fluency — can you open Studio 5000 or TIA Portal and modify running logic — plus vendor certification from Rockwell or Siemens and a track record of commissioning equipment without crashing it.

BLS gives no separate figure for the title. The closest code, Electro-Mechanical and Mechatronics Technologists and Technicians (SOC 17-3024), shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $73,900 a year, or $35.53 an hour, with $47,840 at the 10th percentile and $109,890 at the 90th. Because that code is small and experienced programmers often move into controls-engineer titles counted elsewhere, working automation programmers on commissioning and integration frequently earn above the pooled median.

The line is scope and design authority. A PLC programmer writes and commissions the code for machines and lines, working largely from an existing electrical and control design. A controls engineer owns that design — the architecture, panel and I/O layout, safety-system strategy, network topology and integrator specification — and is usually a degreed engineering role. Many people do both under one title, and moving from programming into controls engineering is the standard pay progression in the field.

For someone who likes machines, logic and being the person who makes a line run, it is one of the better-paying manufacturing paths and one of the few reachable without a four-year degree. Demand is durable because factories keep automating and the workforce that knows the legacy platforms is retiring. The trade-offs are real: off-hours commissioning, travel on integrator work, and the pressure of code that can stop production or create a safety hazard if it is wrong.
