Tanker freight typically pays a premium within that band because the endorsement, the surge-handling skill and the loading responsibility narrow the pool of drivers qualified to haul bulk liquids.

The tanker (N) endorsement is added to a commercial driver's license by passing a state knowledge test on cargo-tank operation — surge, baffles, outage, loading and how liquid movement affects handling. It is required to haul bulk liquids or gases in a tank, and combined with the hazmat endorsement it forms the X endorsement needed for hazardous bulk loads like fuel.

Combining tanker with hazmat for fuel and chemical hauling, or specialising in food-grade or cryogenic products, raises pay further within the tractor-trailer wage band.

A tanker driver hauls bulk liquids in a cargo tank and needs the N endorsement for the handling and loading, whether or not the product is hazardous. A hazmat driver hauls regulated materials — which may be packaged, not bulk — and needs the H endorsement and TSA clearance. Fuel and chemical hauling requires both, the combined X endorsement, so the roles overlap heavily in practice.

A partially filled tank lets the liquid slosh, and that surge pushes the truck forward under braking and outward in corners, making a tanker far more prone to loss of control and rollover than a solid load. Smooth, anticipatory driving — braking early and cornering gently — is the core tanker skill, because cargo-tank rollovers are a leading cause of serious tanker crashes.

You obtain a Class A CDL, completing FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training as a new applicant, then add the tanker (N) endorsement by passing the cargo-tank knowledge test. For fuel and chemical work you also add hazmat, requiring the TSA security threat assessment, for the X endorsement.
