California welders, cutters, solderers and brazers earn a median $58,060 a year, $27.91 an hour, per BLS OEWS May 2025, with the middle half between $48,480 and $70,400 and a full range of $44,520 to $81,940. That is 8.0% above the $53,750 national median — a modest premium given California's cost of living.

San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont at $64,320, then San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara at $64,140, Vallejo at $63,860, Napa at $62,890 and San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad at $62,560. Under two thousand dollars separates all five, and all sit above the state median — the Central Valley and inland markets that BLS does not publish here pay less.

What governs the work is certification to a code or welding procedure: AWS certification for structural work, ASME Section IX qualification for pressure vessels and piping, and API credentials for pipeline. Because its manufacturing base contracted substantially while its welding-intensive industries — shipbuilding, heavy fabrication, primary metals — largely left. It is the state's most durable source of structural welding demand. California's bridge and building retrofit programmes require welded moment connections, jacketing and reinforcement work performed to specification and subject to special inspection — which means certified welders, documented procedures and inspection sign-off. That work is publicly funded and multi-year rather than cyclical, and Caltrans or agency certification is the gate to it.
