Not necessarily. PTCB provides two eligibility routes: completing a PTCB-recognised education or training programme, or demonstrating equivalent pharmacy technician work experience. The experience route exists precisely for technicians who learned on the job before certification became common, though the programme route is now the more usual entry for people new to pharmacy.

It depends on your state. Technician regulation is set by each state board of pharmacy and ranges from simple registration to a certification requirement. Even where the state does not require it, most national retail chains and health systems now expect certification or require it within a defined period after hire, so in practice it functions as the industry standard.

Twenty hours of continuing education every two years, of which at least one hour must be in pharmacy law and at least one hour in patient safety. CE must come from sources PTCB accepts, and you attest to completion when you renew. Because the law and patient safety hours are specific requirements rather than general CE, technicians often complete those first.

It is PTCB's advanced tier. Technicians who hold the core CPhT, meet defined experience requirements and have earned specified assessment-based certificates can qualify for the Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician designation. It is aimed at technicians taking on expanded responsibilities such as sterile compounding, medication history or billing and reimbursement.

PTCB sets the point at which candidates become eligible relative to programme completion, and it has permitted candidates in the final stage of a recognised programme to apply. Because that policy is specific and changes, confirm current eligibility timing with PTCB before scheduling — testing too early risks an application rejection rather than a failed exam.
