What is a CPhT and how do you become one?
CPhT stands for Certified Pharmacy Technician, the credential awarded by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Eligibility runs through one of two routes: completing a PTCB-recognised education or training programme, or having equivalent pharmacy technician work experience, alongside disclosure of criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration actions and compliance with PTCB's certification policies. Candidates then pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam, a multiple-choice examination covering medications, federal requirements, patient safety and quality assurance, and order entry and processing. Certification runs two years and is renewed with 20 hours of continuing education including a required hour of pharmacy law and a required hour of patient safety. Many state boards of pharmacy recognise or require CPhT for technician registration, and PTCB also offers advanced and specialised certificates above the core credential.

PTCE Format, What the Exam Tests
Four knowledge domains, multiple choice
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam is a computer-based multiple-choice examination built on four knowledge domains: Medications; Federal Requirements; Patient Safety and Quality Assurance; and Order Entry and Processing. Medications carries the largest weight โ brand and generic names, therapeutic classes, common doses, interactions and storage. The exam is scaled and reported as pass or fail against a fixed standard rather than graded on a curve.
Beyond the core credential
Does CPhT certification change pharmacy technician pay?
Certification is increasingly the baseline rather than a differentiator: chains, health systems and many state boards expect it. Where it changes earnings is in access to hospital, sterile compounding and specialty roles that sit above the retail counter.
GlobalCybers reimburses certification fees after a successful permanent placement through our network.
What the PTCE Covers, Exam Domains
Medications
The largest domain: recognising brand and generic pairs, therapeutic classes, common strengths and dosage forms, significant interactions and the storage conditions particular products require.
Federal Requirements
Controlled substance schedules, DEA forms and record-keeping, restricted distribution programmes, and the federal framework technicians work inside daily.
Patient Safety
High-alert medications, look-alike/sound-alike pairs, the error-prevention strategies pharmacies use, and the technician's role in catching problems before dispensing.
Order Entry & Processing
Taking the prescription through the system accurately: patient and drug matching, insurance and third-party rejections, and the verification checkpoints that precede the pharmacist's final check.
Pharmacy Calculations
Concentrations and dilutions, days supply, dosing by weight, and the unit conversions that underpin both retail dispensing and sterile compounding.
Compounding
Non-sterile compounding fundamentals plus the sterile compounding practice governed by USP standards, which PTCB also covers in a dedicated assessment-based certificate.
How do you become a Certified Pharmacy Technician?
Choose your eligibility route
PTCB offers two pathways: completion of a PTCB-recognised education or training programme, or equivalent pharmacy technician work experience. The programme route suits career changers; the experience route suits technicians already working who never formally trained. Check which recognised programmes are available near you before committing.
Apply and make the required disclosures
The application requires disclosure of criminal convictions and any State Board of Pharmacy registration or licence actions, and agreement to PTCB's certification policies. Disclosure is not automatically disqualifying, but a non-disclosure discovered later is treated far more seriously than the underlying matter.
Pass the PTCE
Schedule at a Pearson VUE test centre and sit the multiple-choice examination across the four domains. Preparation focuses hardest on the Medications domain, which carries the most weight and is where candidates without dispensing experience are weakest.
Register with your state board, then recertify every two years
Certification is national; the authority to work as a technician is granted by your state board of pharmacy, which may require registration, licensure or certification. Maintain the credential with 20 CE hours per two-year cycle, including one hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety.
Certification, Registration and Licensure Are Not the Same
Pharmacy technician regulation is a state matter and it varies widely: some states require registration only, others require certification from a recognised body, and some impose training requirements on top. PTCB certification is the most widely recognised technician credential in the country and many boards name it explicitly, but holding it does not by itself authorise you to work โ you must satisfy your own state board's requirements as well.
