Yes, and for most techs it is the upgrade path. Hospital technicians compound sterile IV preparations in USP 797/800 cleanrooms, stock automated dispensing cabinets on the floors, and in tech-check-tech states verify other technicians' work — responsibilities that justify higher pay and weekday-plus-rotation schedules. Hospitals usually require national certification and often prior experience or a compounding certificate, which is why a year or two in retail is the common first chapter.

Technicians run the operational pipeline: prescription data entry, insurance billing, counting and labeling, inventory, compounding preparation and customer service. Pharmacists hold the clinical and legal authority — every fill a tech prepares passes the pharmacist's final verification, and counseling, drug-utilization review and clinical decisions belong to them exclusively.
