Start by checking what your jurisdiction requires, because licensing differs enormously: several states and major cities issue graded stationary engineer licences, while other states regulate nothing. Where a licence exists, the route is to hire into a plant as a tender or helper, accrue documented operating hours under a licensed chief engineer, take a boiler operator course covering combustion, water treatment and code, then sit the graded examination. Stationary Engineers and Boiler Operators (SOC 51-8021) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $78,620 a year, $37.80 an hour, ranging from $50,590 at the 10th percentile to $125,390 at the 90th. That is one of the widest bands in the trades, and it maps almost directly onto licence class and plant size: a low-pressure operator in a small commercial building sits near the bottom, while a chief engineer running a hospital or university powerhouse on a union agreement sits near the top.

In much of the country, yes — but it depends entirely on the jurisdiction. States including Ohio, Massachusetts, Minnesota and Maryland, and cities including Chicago and New York, license boiler and stationary engineer work in graded classes, typically defined by allowable boiler horsepower and steam pressure, with documented plant hours plus an examination required for each class. Other states impose no operator licensing at all and leave the matter to insurers and employers. The boiler itself is separately inspected under jurisdictional and National Board rules regardless.

Scope. A boiler operator's responsibility is the steam or hot-water plant: firing, water level, feedwater chemistry, safety devices and combustion. A stationary engineer runs the whole central plant — boilers plus chillers, compressors, pumps, cooling towers and often the building automation system — and typically holds a higher licence class. BLS combines them in one code, which is why this record treats the mapping as close rather than exact. In practice most careers begin on the boiler side and expand into refrigeration and controls.

Stored energy. A boiler holds water above its atmospheric boiling point under pressure; if the vessel fails, that water flashes to steam almost instantly and releases enormous energy. The classic failure sequences are low water combined with a failed cutoff, allowing tubes or the crown sheet to overheat, and fuel accumulation in the firebox producing a furnace explosion on ignition. That is why the routine is so heavily proceduralized: purge cycles, tested low-water cutoffs, try-levered safety valves and logged rounds.

Automated, yes; eliminated, no. Modern plants run burner management systems, automatic blowdown and building automation that handle normal operation without intervention, and headcounts in small plants have fallen as a result. What has not changed is that jurisdictions with licensing law still require licensed attendance for boilers above defined thresholds, that chemistry and mechanical inspection remain physical tasks, and that upset conditions require someone who understands the plant. BLS projects the occupation roughly flat at 2.2% growth rather than shrinking.
