You apply and get hired. This is the one construction occupation with essentially no gate: no degree, no license, no apprenticeship prerequisite. Contractors screen for reliability, physical capability, transportation and the ability to pass a drug test. Showing up with an OSHA 10 card already in hand puts you ahead of most applicants because it saves the contractor a training cost. From there, the Laborers' International Union also runs registered apprenticeships that pay while adding formal certifications.

Construction Laborers (SOC 47-2061) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $47,120 a year, $22.66 an hour, ranging from $35,090 at the 10th percentile to $78,090 at the 90th. That is an unusually wide band for an entry occupation, and it reflects two different labor markets: unorganized residential and light commercial work at the bottom, and union heavy-civil, industrial and infrastructure work — with certifications and prevailing wage rates — at the top.

It is an excellent starting position and a mediocre destination. As an entry point it is unmatched: immediate pay, no debt, exposure to every trade on the site, and roughly 129,400 openings a year. As a permanent role it plateaus, because general labor is the most substitutable work on a job site. People who do well treat the first two years as reconnaissance, then commit — to a union apprenticeship, to a certification stack, or to a specialty trade whose journeymen they have been working next to.

Nearly everything that is not a licensed trade task. That includes excavation and backfill, trench shoring and bedding pipe, demolition, concrete placement support, scaffold erection, mason tending, flagging and traffic control, operating compactors, breakers and saws, rigging loads under cranes, and continuous site cleanup. On heavy civil projects laborers also handle asphalt work, drainage structures and environmental remediation. The specific mix varies enormously between residential, commercial and infrastructure contractors.

Excavation collapse is the signature hazard — OSHA 1926 Subpart P exists because unshored trenches kill workers with almost no warning, and a competent person must inspect them daily. Beyond that: struck-by incidents from equipment and traffic in work zones, falls from scaffolds and edges, silica exposure from cutting and grinding concrete regulated under 1926.1153, and heat illness on summer civil work. Laborers are disproportionately represented in construction fatality statistics because they occupy the zones where those hazards concentrate.

Usually through relationships built on site. A laborer who is reliable, curious and safe is noticed by the trade foremen he works alongside, and a recommendation from one of them is often what gets an apprenticeship application read. Operating engineers, cement masons, carpenters and pipefitters all draw recruits from labor. The alternative route is direct application to a joint apprenticeship committee, where documented construction experience and an OSHA card strengthen an otherwise ordinary application.
