Frequently yes. CODA-accredited programs have small clinic capacities, so a program may take 20–30 students from well over a hundred applicants. Selection leans on prerequisite science GPA, observation hours in a dental office, and sometimes the TEAS entrance test. The coursework itself is demanding — head-and-neck anatomy, pharmacology, radiology and a heavy clinic load — but attrition is low once admitted because seats are precious.

It depends on the state's supervision rules. Most states require at least general supervision — a dentist has authorized the treatment but need not be on site. A growing number allow direct-access hygiene, letting RDHs treat patients in schools, nursing homes and public-health clinics without prior authorization. Check your state dental board's practice act, because supervision level defines where the licence can actually be used.

The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination is a 350-question, day-long written exam covering the biomedical sciences, clinical hygiene and case-based patient scenarios, administered by the ADA's Joint Commission. First-time pass rates from accredited programs typically run above 80–90%, because CODA curricula are built around it. You then still need a hands-on clinical board (ADEX or a state exam) before a licence issues.

Growing. BLS projects 7% employment growth for 2024–2034 — faster than average — with about 15,300 openings a year. Demand rests on demographics: older adults are keeping their natural teeth and need lifelong periodontal maintenance, and evidence tying oral health to systemic disease keeps preventive recall schedules full. The main frictions are physical (repetitive strain on hands and shoulders) rather than economic.
