Ironworkers erect the structural skeleton of buildings and bridges and place the steel that reinforces concrete. Structural ironworkers rig, land and connect beams, columns and joists at height, then plumb, bolt and weld the frame square. Reinforcing ironworkers — rodbusters — cut, bend, place and tie rebar before concrete is poured. Ornamental ironworkers install stairs, railings, curtain wall and metal decking. Most journeymen work across several of these depending on what the local market builds.

Through a registered apprenticeship of roughly three to four paid years. The Iron Workers union runs joint apprenticeship committees with steel-erection contractors that take applicants on a basic maths and reading test, an interview and a physical capability screen; open-shop erectors train through NCCER curricula instead. Apprentices rotate through structural, reinforcing, rigging and welding work while completing several hundred classroom hours a year, and typically qualify to AWS D1.1 for welding along the way.

Structural Iron and Steel Workers (SOC 47-2221) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $62,780, or $30.18 an hour, spanning $44,580 at the 10th percentile to $108,260 at the 90th. That is one of the widest spreads in the trades, and it is driven mostly by market and role: union scale in dense metros with a raising-gang or foreman position sits near the top, while open-shop work in low-cost regions sits near the bottom. Weather and project gaps also affect annual totals significantly.

It is consistently among the most hazardous construction occupations, and honesty about that is part of the trade's culture. The hazards are falls from height, being struck by swinging or dropped loads, crush injuries during connecting, and weather exposure on exposed steel. OSHA 1926 Subpart R governs steel erection specifically, and the controls that matter are continuous tie-off, disciplined rigging by qualified riggers, controlled decking zones and clear signal communication. Complacency, not inexperience, is what crews warn about most.

Structural welds are governed by the American Welding Society's D1.1 Structural Welding Code, and a welder must pass a qualification test in the specific process and position before running production welds — qualification that lapses without continuity of practice. Apprenticeships build welding into the curriculum for this reason, and journeymen who hold current tickets are simply useful on more scopes, which is why the credential moves pay.
