New crew members start near the 10th percentile of $41,600, NABCEP-certified leads sit around the 75th percentile of $62,870, and the top 10% — utility-scale supervisors and installers who double as licensed electricians — exceed $79,970. The growth story is real: BLS projects 42.1% employment growth for the occupation from 2024 to 2034, among the fastest it tracks, on the back of falling equipment costs and the utility-scale buildout. Two caveats keep it honest. The occupation is small — about 31,000 jobs, so roughly 4,100 openings a year — and residential demand swings with interest rates and state incentive changes. Installers who add storage skills, NABCEP certification or an electrician licence are the most insulated from those swings.

There is no dedicated solar installer licence in most states, and NABCEP certification is voluntary — but two legal layers still apply. First, the electrical interconnection: in many states the AC-side connection and often the whole PV electrical system must be installed by or under a licensed electrician or licensed solar contractor. Second, jobsite rules: OSHA fall-protection compliance is mandatory on every roof. NABCEP's PVIP, while voluntary, is the credential contractors advertise and pay more for.

NABCEP runs a two-tier path. The PV Associate is an entry credential: a training course plus an exam, with no field experience required — useful for getting the first job. The PV Installation Professional (PVIP) is the flagship: it requires documented experience across multiple installations, training hours, and a rigorous exam covering design, NEC Article 690 wiring rules, commissioning and safety. Recertification requires continuing education, which keeps the credential current as storage and rapid-shutdown requirements evolve.

If you want the top of the pay range, yes. Panel racking is open to anyone trained, but the electrical side — inverter wiring, service panel work, the utility interconnection — is licensed electrical work in many states, which means crews depend on electricians to finish every job. An installer who completes an electrical apprenticeship combines PV field experience with permit authority, moving from the $53,140 installer median toward electrician-and-above pay ($63,190 median, with solar specialists higher) and qualifying to run their own installs.
