This is one of the few construction-adjacent occupations with essentially no formal entry requirement: a high school diploma, comfort working at height and reliable transport are the practical screens. Employers then train crews over weeks on racking systems, flashing methods, module handling and their own installation standards. A NABCEP PV Associate credential earned through a short approved course is a common way for candidates with no construction history to get a first interview.

Solar Photovoltaic Installers (SOC 47-2231) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $53,140 a year, $25.55 an hour, from $41,600 at the 10th percentile to $79,970 at the 90th. That is a comparatively narrow band, reflecting how quickly the work can be learned. The upper end belongs to crew leads, NABCEP-certified professionals, installers who also commission battery storage, and those working commercial and utility-scale projects with travel pay rather than local residential rooftops.

Not to be hired — most installers are not certified. But NABCEP's PV Installation Professional certification, which requires documented installation experience, training hours and a proctored examination, matters commercially: state incentive programs, utility interconnection programs and commercial specifications frequently require a certified professional to be attached to the project. For an individual, it is the clearest way to demonstrate competence in a trade with no licence and highly variable employer training quality.

It is a good entry and a demanding one to sustain. The growth is genuine — BLS projects 42.1% for 2024–2034, the strongest rate in the trades — and the barrier to entry is almost nonexistent, so it converts unskilled labor into paid work quickly. Against that, the median of $53,140 is modest, the work is on roofs in weather, and residential solar demand is sensitive to interest rates, incentive policy and net-metering rules that change by state. Adding electrical licensure or storage expertise is what makes it durable.

NEC Article 690 requires that PV arrays on buildings be able to reduce conductor voltage inside the array boundary to a safe level within seconds of a disconnect being operated, so firefighters can work on a roof without a live DC source underneath them. In practice this is achieved with module-level electronics — microinverters or DC optimizers — one per module. For installers it means every module is paired and mapped during commissioning, and that the rapid-shutdown function is tested before the system is signed off.

Scope and licensure. An installation crew handles the structural and mechanical side — layout, flashing, racking, mounting modules, dressing DC runs — and much of that is not licensed work. Making the connection to the building's service equipment, sizing overcurrent protection and signing off the electrical installation is licensed electrical work in most states, performed by an electrician who may or may not be on the same crew. Installers who go on to earn an electrical licence substantially increase both scope and pay.
