Through the field, not a classroom. Riggers emerge from construction labor, ironworking, millwright, shipyard and stagehand work — occupations where they are already handling loads under supervision. Formal training then follows, delivered by employers, union training centers or third-party schools, covering load charts, sling configurations and capacity, center of gravity, hardware ratings and signalling. NCCCO certification comes after that, by written and practical examination. The sequence is deliberately experience-first because rigging judgment is not teachable in the abstract.

Riggers (SOC 49-9096) show an OEWS May 2025 median of $62,640 a year, or $30.12 an hour, from $40,680 at the 10th percentile to $97,850 at the 90th. Sector explains most of the variation: shipyard, refinery and heavy-industrial rigging pays materially better than general construction rigging, and turnaround and outage work adds long shifts with per diem. Entertainment rigging is a separate market again, priced by touring schedules and venue agreements rather than construction scale.

It is the entry-level national rigging certification from the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, covering routine rigging: inspecting slings and hardware, using standard hitch configurations, understanding capacity derating by sling angle, and rigging loads whose weight and center of gravity are known or provided. It requires passing both a written and a practical examination and is valid for five years. Level II extends into estimating load weight and center of gravity independently, multi-crane lifts and complex configurations.

OSHA's language matters here. Under 1926 Subpart CC, a qualified rigger is someone who, by recognized degree, certificate or extensive experience, has demonstrated the ability to solve problems relating to the rigging being performed — a functional standard the employer determines. A certified rigger holds a third-party credential such as NCCCO. Certification is not legally required to be qualified, but it is the cleanest evidence of it, which is why many owners, refineries and general contractors require it contractually even though OSHA does not.

Because tension in each leg rises sharply as the angle to horizontal decreases. A two-leg bridle at 60 degrees carries roughly 58% of the load per leg; drop to 30 degrees and each leg carries the full load weight — the geometry has doubled the tension without anyone adding weight. Riggers work this from tension charts or trigonometry on every non-vertical hitch. The failures that make incident reports are usually not overloaded cranes but slings and shackles loaded past rating by geometry nobody calculated.

Only modestly. BLS projects 3.2% growth for 2024–2034 with about 2,500 openings a year, which reflects how small the dedicated code is — enormous amounts of rigging work are performed by ironworkers, millwrights, laborers and operators reported under their own occupations. The realistic read is that rigging skill is in demand everywhere while the job title 'rigger' is comparatively rare, so the certification tends to be more valuable as an addition to another trade than as a standalone career on its own.
