The job splits into before, during and after. Before welding, the inspector verifies that the welding procedure specification is supported by a qualification record, that each welder holds a current qualification covering the joint, and that materials, consumables and joint preparation match the procedure. It is the American Welding Society's Certified Welding Inspector credential, the recognized qualification for visual weld inspection in North America. It is not a licence issued by a government body; it is a professional certification whose weight comes from contracts and codes that specify inspection by a CWI. It is maintained through a nine-year certification cycle with renewal requirements, and vision acuity must be re-examined every three years for the certification to stay valid.

BLS gives no separate figure. The category welding inspectors fall into — Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers (SOC 51-9061) — shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $48,570 a year, or $23.35 an hour, with $35,510 at the 10th percentile and $77,860 at the 90th. That pooled code covers general factory and product inspection, so it sits below what certified inspectors on structural, pipeline and pressure work typically command, particularly on travel and shutdown assignments.

For welders whose bodies or interests are moving them off the arc, it is the most direct credentialed exit the trade offers. The years of hood time that make the eligibility requirement easy to meet are also what make an inspector credible on a fabrication floor. The honest caveats are that the exam has a substantial failure rate, the seminar and testing cost real money, and the work trades physical strain for documentation responsibility and the friction of rejecting other people's welds.

A welding inspector's core method is visual inspection plus the review of procedure and qualification records, working to a code's acceptance criteria and signing the inspection record. An NDT technician performs specific examination methods — ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, penetrant — under qualifications written to ASNT SNT-TC-1A and reports the findings. The roles overlap heavily in practice, and many people hold both, since a CWI with UT Level II can call and perform the volumetric testing rather than scheduling someone else.
