What is an MLT and how do you get certified?
MLT(ASCP) is the Medical Laboratory Technician credential from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification, the associate-degree-level certification for clinical laboratory practice. Technicians perform routine testing across chemistry, haematology, immunohaematology, microbiology, immunology and urinalysis, run quality control, operate and troubleshoot analysers, and release results within defined protocols. Eligibility routes combine an associate degree with either completion of an accredited medical laboratory technician programme or documented clinical laboratory experience meeting the board's requirements; military laboratory training is also recognised through a published route. The examination is computer adaptive and spans all the laboratory disciplines. The credential is maintained on a three-year cycle through the Credential Maintenance Program, and many technicians later bridge to the baccalaureate-level Medical Laboratory Scientist credential.

MLT Exam Format and Discipline Coverage
Every discipline on one exam
The MLT examination is computer adaptive and spans the full range of routine laboratory work: blood banking, urinalysis and body fluids, chemistry, haematology, immunology, microbiology and laboratory operations. Because it is adaptive, the engine will find and probe a weak discipline quickly β a candidate strong in chemistry but shaky in blood banking cannot rely on the average carrying them.

What does MLT certification mean for laboratory pay?
Certification is the hiring standard for technician roles in acute-care laboratories and a licensure input in several states. Meaningful pay movement comes from bridging to the scientist credential or into a specialist discipline.
GlobalCybers reimburses certification fees after a successful permanent placement through our network.
What the MLT Exam Covers, Routine Laboratory Practice
Bench Workflow
The daily reality of technician work: specimen acceptability, run set-up, calibration and controls, result review and knowing when a result must not be released.
Blood Banking Basics
ABO and Rh typing, antibody screening, crossmatch procedure and component handling β the discipline where a procedural error has the most immediate patient consequence.
Quality Control
Levey-Jennings charts, Westgard rules, shift and trend recognition, and the corrective action expected before patient results go out.
Microbiology Fundamentals
Specimen adequacy, plating and incubation, colony morphology and identification workflows, and the basics of susceptibility testing.
Urinalysis & Body Fluids
Physical, chemical and microscopic examination, cell and crystal identification, and the correlation between findings that flags a preanalytical problem.
Safety & Preanalytics
Bloodborne pathogen precautions, chemical hygiene, and the preanalytical variables β collection, transport, storage β that cause more bad results than the analysers ever do.
How do you become a certified Medical Laboratory Technician?
Choose an eligibility route
The most common path is an associate degree that includes an accredited MLT programme with clinical rotations. The board also publishes routes based on documented clinical laboratory experience and on recognised military laboratory training, which suit people already working in a laboratory or leaving service.
Complete the programme and clinical rotations
Accredited programmes combine coursework with rotations through chemistry, haematology, blood bank, microbiology and urinalysis. The rotations matter for the exam as much as for employment, because the adaptive examination tests applied judgement rather than recall.
Apply and verify eligibility
Submit transcripts and, on the experience route, employer verification. The board authorises testing only after eligibility is confirmed, so incomplete documentation delays the exam rather than the application.
Sit the adaptive exam and maintain the credential
Schedule through Pearson VUE. After certification, maintain the credential on the three-year Credential Maintenance Program cycle, and consider the published bridging routes to the Medical Laboratory Scientist credential if you intend to move up.
Personnel Requirements Follow Testing Complexity
Federal quality regulation of clinical laboratories ties personnel qualification requirements to the complexity of the testing being performed, so the tests a laboratory runs determine who may run them. Several states additionally license clinical laboratory personnel outright and recognise national certification in their requirements. Between the two, plus laboratory accreditation expectations around documented competence, MLT certification is effectively required in acute-care laboratories.
