The shortest route is a welding certificate at a technical college, six months to two years, covering transfer modes, shielding gases, wire selection and joint preparation across positions. Many fabrication shops also train in-house from a helper position, because short-circuit GMAW on jigged parts is learnable in weeks. Either way, employers will test you to their own qualified procedure before putting you on production, and that witnessed test — not the school certificate — is what actually qualifies you to weld their parts.

BLS reports all welding processes together under SOC 51-4121 at an OEWS May 2025 median of $53,750 a year, $25.84 an hour, from $39,240 at the 10th percentile to $77,530 at the 90th. Dedicated production MIG welders in light manufacturing generally sit in the lower and middle part of that range, because the process is the easiest to staff. Aluminium GMAW, multi-process capability, robotic cell work and shift or overtime premiums are what move a MIG welder above the median.

Considerably. GMAW feeds wire automatically and shields the puddle with gas, so a usable bead comes within days and the process tolerates a less steady hand. TIG requires simultaneous torch, filler and foot-pedal control, far cleaner joint preparation, and unforgiving tungsten and gas management. That difference explains the pay gap: TIG welders on stainless, aluminium and thin-wall aerospace or food-grade work sit above the parent median, while MIG's accessibility is exactly what keeps production wages closer to it.

In repetitive high-volume production, largely yes — a robotic cell runs a fixtured seam faster and more consistently than any person, and GMAW is the process best suited to automation. What does not automate well is fit-up, one-off and low-volume fabrication, repair work, awkward geometry and anything requiring judgement about a joint that does not match the print. The practical response is to move toward cell setup, fixture design and programming, or toward processes and positions robots handle poorly.

They describe how metal crosses the arc. Short-circuit transfer runs at low voltage and current, with the wire repeatedly touching the puddle — cool, controllable, suited to thin material and out-of-position work, but prone to cold lap on thicker sections because heat input is low. Spray transfer runs at higher voltage with the metal crossing as fine droplets, giving deep penetration and high deposition, but the puddle is fluid, so it is largely limited to the flat and horizontal positions. Pulsed spray splits the difference and is standard for aluminium.

Not a licence, but effectively yes for anything code-governed. What a welder holds is a qualification record showing they passed a witnessed test to a particular welding procedure specification, process, position and thickness range — issued by the employer or by an AWS Accredited Test Facility. It stays valid while you continue welding with that process, subject to a maximum period of inactivity, and lapses otherwise. Shops making non-code consumer or agricultural products may test only informally, which is part of why wages there sit lower.
