Two routes work. The shorter is a welding certificate at a technical college, typically six months to two years, covering stick, flux-core and MIG across positions and ending with the ability to pass a test coupon — from there you hire into a fabrication shop and build field skills. The other is an Iron Workers registered apprenticeship of three to four years, which teaches welding within a broader field trade including connecting, rigging and reinforcing steel, and generally pays better in erection work.

BLS reports all welding together under Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers (SOC 51-4121), at an OEWS May 2025 median of $53,750 a year, $25.84 an hour, from $39,240 at the 10th percentile to $77,530 at the 90th. Structural field welders — particularly organized ironworker welders on commercial and infrastructure erection — generally sit above that median, while shop production welders in light manufacturing populate the lower half. Travel, per diem and overtime on industrial projects move annual earnings substantially.

Strictly speaking there is no such thing as being 'D1.1 certified' in general. AWS D1.1 is the Structural Welding Code for steel, and it specifies joint details, prequalified welding procedure specifications, acceptance criteria and the tests by which a welder is qualified. What a welder holds is a qualification record — a WPQR — showing they passed a witnessed test to a particular procedure, process, position and thickness range. It stays valid while you continue welding with that process and lapses after a defined period of inactivity.

No, though they overlap on site. An ironworker is a field trade: connecting and erecting structural steel, placing reinforcing bar, rigging and bolting, with welding as one skill among several learned in a three- to four-year apprenticeship. A structural welder may be exactly that ironworker doing the welding portion, or may be a shop welder who welds fabricated assemblies and never erects anything. BLS reports them under different codes, which is one reason the welding median understates organized field structural work.

Code, geometry and testing regime. Structural welding works to AWS D1.1 on plate, beams and connections, dominated by fillet and groove welds in flux-core, and is typically inspected visually and ultrasonically. Pipe welding works to ASME Section IX and B31 piping codes on circumferential joints, frequently with a TIG root and radiographic examination, with tolerances and cleanliness demands that make the qualification harder to obtain and hold. Pay generally favours pipe, and the two qualifications do not substitute for one another.

Qualification records lapse rather than expire on a fixed date in most schemes. Under AWS D1.1 a welder's qualification remains in effect as long as they continue to weld with that process, with a defined maximum period of inactivity — commonly six months — before requalification is required. Employers also routinely re-test on hire regardless of what paperwork you arrive with, because they are responsible for the welds under their own quality system. In practice, staying qualified means staying working.
