A TIG welder joins metal using gas tungsten arc welding — a non-consumable tungsten electrode under inert gas shielding, with filler added by hand and current controlled by a foot pedal or torch control. The process is chosen where weld quality and appearance matter more than deposition rate: thin stainless and aluminum sheet, sanitary and high-purity process tube, aerospace alloys, titanium, and root passes on pipe that will be capped with a faster process afterwards.

BLS reports all welding under one code: Welders, Cutters, Solderers, and Brazers (SOC 51-4121) shows an OEWS May 2025 median of $53,750 a year, or $25.84 an hour, with $39,240 at the 10th percentile and $77,530 at the 90th. TIG specialists generally sit above the midpoint of that range because the sectors that require GTAW — pharmaceutical, aerospace, semiconductor and high-purity fabrication — pay for the qualification and the slower deposition rate the process implies.

Considerably, and for a specific reason: MIG feeds filler automatically through the gun, so one hand controls the weld, while TIG requires the torch in one hand, filler rod in the other and amperage on a foot pedal, all coordinated while holding a very short arc. That means a longer learning curve and much slower travel speed. The payoff is precision — control over heat input and appearance that MIG cannot match on thin, reactive or high-purity material.

Anything where contamination, heat input or appearance is critical. Austenitic stainless steel in food, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical process piping is the biggest volume, generally with an argon purge on the back side of the root. Aluminum, welded on AC to break the oxide layer, dominates in transport, marine and general fabrication. Titanium and nickel alloys in aerospace and chemical service require the most exacting shielding, and copper alloys and thin carbon steel round out the list.

Codes generally treat a performance qualification as valid while the welder continues using the process, with a defined lapse period of inactivity — commonly six months — after which requalification is required. Employers also revoke qualifications where there is reason to question a welder's ability. Practically, this means a TIG welder's employability rests on maintaining a portfolio of live tickets in current use, not on a one-time certificate earned years earlier.
